Japanese races to award one Kentucky Derby berth

Churchill Downs will award a Japanese horse an automatic berth in next year’s Kentucky Derby under a new program assigning points to participants in two Japanese stakes races, the track announced on Monday.

The two one-mile dirt races at Tokyo Racecourse will be the Cattleya Sho for 2-year-olds on Nov. 26 and the Hyacinth for 3-year-olds, expected to be run “early in 2017,” according to a release from Churchill and the Japan Racing Association.

New York drug-testing lab gains accreditation

An industry-funded racing organization has granted full accreditation to the drug-testing laboratory that is required by law to be used for horse racing taking place in New York State, the organization said on Friday.

The Racing Medication and Testing Consortium accredited the New York Drug Testing Laboratory after a vote by its Horseracing Testing Laboratory Committee, the RMTC said. The laboratory, based at Morrisville State University in upstate New York, conducts drug testing for all Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds that race in the state.

Maldonado undergoes surgery to repair broken ribs

Edwin Maldonado is expected to need three to six months to recover from broken ribs and a collapsed lung.

Jockey Edwin Maldonado will miss three to six months of riding as the result of seven broken ribs and a collapsed lung sustained in a training accident at Del Mar last Sunday, according to his friend, jockey Alex Jimenez.

Maldonado underwent surgery on Wednesday at a hospital in La Jolla, Calif., to have a plate and screws inserted in three ribs to facilitate healing, Jimenez said.

“He was in so much pain every time he moved,” Jimenez said. “They had to repair them to make them more stable.

Parx plans to add 10 days to 2016 season

Parx Racing will add 10 days to its racing schedule this year, pending approval of the Pennsylvania Racing Commission, according to track officials and Mike Ballezzi, executive director of the Pennsylvania Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association.

Parx began its 2016 season two weeks later than originally planned and lost eight racing days as the installation of a new safety rail and track maintenance took longer than scheduled. The track also canceled its July 25 card due to extreme heat.

Ellis Park all-sources handle rises 9 percent

All-sources handle at the Ellis Park meet that ended Monday was up 9.2 percent, while ontrack handle was down marginally due in part to weather extremes early in the 30-day meet, officials at the western Kentucky track reported this week.

Total handle was nearly $35.3 million, surpassing the $32.3 million bet in 2015. Ontrack wagering totaled $4.67 million, down nearly 4 percent from the $4.84 million bet last year.

The Jockey Club has elected four new members, the organization announced on Tuesday, including the new president of Claiborne Farm in Central Kentucky.

Walker Hancock, the fourth generation of the Hancock family to lead Claiborne, was elected along with Carlos Heller, the chairman of a racetrack in Chile; R. Alex Rankin, the president of Upson Downs Farm in Goshen, Ky.; and Stuart Brown, the former president of Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington, Ky.

Handle on U.S. races dips in August

Wagering on races held at U.S. racetracks dropped 9.4 percent in August when compared with the same month last year, according to figures released by Equibase on Monday, but the comparison was weakened by a surfeit of weekend dates in August of last year.

Wagering in August this year dropped from $1.14 billion to $1.04 billion, but August this year had eight weekend dates compared with 10 weekend dates in August of last year. Wagering on weekend dates is typically far higher than on weekdays.

Mike Zwiesler, trainer for Lane's End, dies at 58

Mike Zwiesler, who was a trainer and assistant for Lane’s End Farm during a lengthy and distinguished career working with Thoroughbreds, died early Saturday at his home near Tampa, Fla., after a lengthy bout with cancer. He was 58.

Zwiesler, who grew up in Ohio as the son of a horse owner, began working under trainer Neil Howard in 1980.

“When he walked into my barn at River Downs, it was one of those things where we kind of became family right away,” said Howard, the trainer of 2003 Horse of the Year Mineshaft. “Mike was just a great friend and horseman.”

Handle on second leg of Florida sire stakes up 46 percent over last year

Handle on the Saturday races at Gulfstream Park, the second leg of four divisions of Florida sire stakes, was up 46 percent compared to a similar card in 2015, according to handle figures in official charts and information released by the track.

The massive increase came on a card with 13 races, compared to 12 on the comparable day with the four sire stakes last year, but still represented a major gain. Total handle on the Saturday card was $8.1 million, compared with $5.5 million on the corresponding 2015 program.
