Mirahmadi will call races at Golden Gate Fields

Frank Mirahmadi has quite a celebration planned for Oct. 20, his 49th birthday. On that day he will begin calling races at Golden Gate Fields as the track’s full-time announcer.

“We’re excited to have him back,” GGF vice president and general manager Calvin Rainey said. “He’s one of the top announcers in the country.”

Mirahmadi called races at Golden Gate last spring and had also filled in on occasion for previous track announcer Michael Wrona.

Hastings trainer Brown appeals medication violation

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Trainer James Brown has appealed the 45-day suspension and $2,500 fine he was given by the Hastings stewards for one of his horses testing positive for the banned substance methamphetamine.

The ruling, issued on Sept. 23, dates back to when the Brown-trained Crazy Prophet tested positive after finishing second in the $50,000 Jim Coleman Province on May 8. The purse will also be redistributed.

Santa Anita installs surveillance system with more than 1,000 cameras

ARCADIA, Calif. – Step into the Santa Anita stable area, and you will be watched.

The track announced on Thursday that it recently installed a security system with more than 1,000 cameras that will follow activity throughout the stables. The cameras have been installed in high-profile areas such as roads but also around stables and in individual shed rows to follow activity in each stable.

Illinois Racing Board approves 2017 racing dates

CHICAGO – The Illinois Racing Board on Tuesday unanimously passed a 2017 racing schedule that mirrors this year’s, though the dire state of the Illinois racing industry infused the brief annual dates awards meeting with gloom.

Hawthorne has 59 Thoroughbred racing dates next year and starts the Chicago season with two-day weeks in March and three-day weeks in April. They race four days a week in October, three during November, and two-day weeks in December.

Daily handle down about 5 percent at Los Alamitos meet

CYPRESS, Calif. – The 12-day Los Angeles County Fair meeting at Los Alamitos ended on Sunday with a decline of approximately 5 percent in all-sources daily handle, track officials said.

Although final figures will be determined later this week, Los Alamitos officials estimated that all-sources daily handle, including ontrack, out-of-state and account wagering, was $3,918,306, compared with $4,110,983 in 2015.

Parx handle of $9.6 million second-best in track's history

BENSALEM, Pa. - Parx Racing handled $9.6 million on Saturday, the second-highest in track history, according to Joe Wilson, the chief operating officer of Parx.

The handle on Pennsylvania Derby/Cotillion Day was up 65 percent from last year, when Parx handled $5.8 million. The all-time record handle at Parx came on Pennsylvania Derby/Cotillion Day in 2014 when California Chrome ran in the Derby and Untapable raced in the Cotillion. Parx handled $10.3 million that day.
