Total Breeders' Cup handle rises slightly

Betting on the 13 Breeders’ Cup races held Friday and Saturday at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif., was up 1.7 percent over the same 13 races held last year despite steep drops in betting on the $6 million Classic, according to charts.

Total betting on the 13 races, including all horizontal bets ending in a Breeders’ Cup race, was $128.1 million, compared with $125.9 million bet last year, when the event was held at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky., according to the charts. There were 148 total runners in the 13 races this year, compared with 159 horses last year.

Handle on Breeders' Cup Friday races up 5.2 percent

Total handle on the four Breeders’ Cup races held Friday at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif., was up 5.2 percent despite a significant drop in the number of runners in the races, according to charts.

Total handle on the Juvenile Turf, Dirt Mile, Juvenile Fillies Turf, and the headline race, the Distaff, was $30.5 million, according to the charts, up 5.2 percent compared with the same four races held last year on the Friday card at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky. Total runners in the four races this year was 43, while last year’s four races had 53.

TVG launches in high-definition on AT&T U-Verse subscription service

TVG, the horserace broadcasting company and account-wagering operator, was launched on Friday in high-definition on the AT&T U-Verse subscription television platform, the company said.

The launch is the first full-time HD offering of the network on a television platform, TVG said. The network has been broadcast in high-definition for several hours on local cable services in Southern California, but not on a full-time basis.

Net income surges for Eldorado Resorts in third quarter

Eldorado Resorts Inc., the owner of several racetrack-casinos and other standalone casino properties, had net income of $9.7 million in the third quarter of 2016, up 80 percent from net income of $5.4 million in the same quarter last year, according to financial statements released on Thursday.

Louisiana trainer Jonas Gibson charged with horse theft

Jonas Gibson, a trainer based in Louisiana, was arrested on Oct. 25 in Bossier City, La., and charged with stealing at least three racehorses, according to state law-enforcement authorities.

Gibson, 34, remained in custody on a $55,000 bond on Thursday morning on three charges of theft of livestock, according to records of the Bossier Sheriff Office. Carnie Burcham, an investigator who is working the case, said Gibson was apprehended at a Bossier City apartment complex while in the process of moving out.

Suedois injury opens spot for Green Mask in Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint

Green Mask will seek to snap an 11-race losing streak in the 5 1/2-furlong Troy on turf.

Suedois sustained a stress fracture of a foreleg during a turf gallop Thursday and has been withdrawn from the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint.

The injury is not thought to be serious, and Joe Foley, racing manager for Suedois’s owners, said he expected Suedois to return to action in 2017.

Based in England with trainer David O’Meara, Suedois finished second in the Group 1 July Cup, his best performance of the season.

Belmont: Fall meet ends with ties atop jockey and trainer standings

ELMONT, N.Y. - There were ties in the jockey and  trainer standings at the Belmont Park fall meet, which concluded Sunday.

Trainer Chad Brown and jockey Javier Castellano teamed up to win race 8, the $100,000 Chelsey Flower Stakes, tying Rudy Rodriguez and Irad Ortiz Jr. in their respective divisions.

Ortiz and Castellano came into the closing-day card with 47 wins each. Ortiz won race 7 to take the lead and Castellano came right back to win the Chelsey Flower. Ortiz had a mount in the final race of the meet but finished last.
