Hawthorne: Fewer races leads to lower handle

Average daily all-sources handle at Hawthorne’s fall-winter meet fell 7 percent from last year, but that drop came mainly because fewer races were run this season.

Hawthorne averaged $1,679,785 per day during last year’s fall-winter meet and $1,564,655 during the meet that began Oct. 7 and ended Dec. 31. But the 2015-16 fall-winter meet had 47 races days and 408 races compared with this season’s 42-day meet with only 363 races.

Fifth case of equine herpesvirus at Fair Grounds

A horse at Fair Grounds returned a positive test Tuesday for the so-called “wild” strain of the equine herpesvirus, or EHV-1.

That marks the fifth EHV-1 positive at Fair Grounds since a horse housed in barn 14 who had been euthanized after becoming neurologic tested positive for the virus Dec. 26. Another horse in barn 14 tested positive Dec. 31 after getting sick. Both of the horses in barn 14 were positive for the neuropathogenic strain of EHV-1, which far more often results in neurologic symptoms, severe illness, and fatalities than the milder wild-type strain.

Fair Grounds: Third horse tests positive for equine herpesvirus

A third horse has tested positive for the equine herpesvirus at Fair Grounds, this one in a different barn than the first two cases.

The track, though, in a press release Sunday night, said the most recent test showed a slightly different strain of the virus than the one for which the first two horses tested positive. That information implies that that the virus, which can be highly transmissible, had not necessarily spread across the backstretch.
