Woodbine to shut down HPItv channel

The parent company of Woodbine Racecourse near Toronto, Ontario has shut down its multi-card television channel which provided live racing coverage in the province, citing declining viewership and increasing costs, according to an announcement from the company.

2016 betting at Gulfstream Park and Gulfstream Park West sets record

Total wagering on races held at Gulfstream Park and Gulfstream Park West at Calder Race Course in 2016 was a record $1.51 billion, up 13 percent compared with the total wagering on the tracks’ races last year, according to figures released on Tuesday by Gulfstream’s owner, The Stronach Group.

This is the second year in a row that handle on races run at the two South Florida tracks rose by double digits. Last year, total handle on the tracks was $1.34 billion, up 14 percent over the total from 2014.

Ellis banned from running horses in 2017 Breeders' Cup

The trainer Ron Ellis will not be allowed to enter any horses in the 2017 Breeders’ Cup under a formal adoption of a sanction by Breeders’ Cup on Tuesday regarding a positive test for a trace amount of an anabolic steroid after the Ellis-trained Masochistic finished second in the 2016 Sprint.

The 2017 prohibition, announced Tuesday by Breeders' Cup, will also apply to Masochistic under rules Breeders’ Cup adopted several years ago to project a tough stance on the use of medications and drugs in racing.

Sheldon Robbins, co-owner of Arlington during track's rise from ashes, dies at 78

Sheldon Robbins, who was part of the ownership team that was honored with a Special Eclipse Award for its effort to put on the Arlington Million less than four weeks following a fire that destroyed the track’s grandstand, died on Monday of cancer, according to a family representative. Robbins was 78.

Handle up sharply in Maryland in 2016

Total handle on races at Laurel Park and Pimlico Race Course in Maryland last year was up 19.7 percent from 2015, while in-state handle for the year jumped 18.4 percent, according to figures released Monday by the owner of the tracks.

Total wagering soared from $466 million in 2015 to $559 million last year, according to the Maryland Jockey Club, which is owned by The Stronach Group. Wagering by in-state residents on Thoroughbred racing, including out-of-state signals, leaped from $119.7 million to $141.8 million.

Two more positive tests for equine herpesvirus at Fair Grounds

Two more horses at Fair Grounds tested positive for equine herpesvirus Saturday. The horses are housed in barn 36 and are trained by Mike Stidham. Both, according to a Fair Grounds release, returned a positive test from a nasal swab for the wild sub-type of the EHV-1 virus.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Stewards in Kentucky have issued a ruling rescinding a 40-day suspension handed down last year to trainer Mike Maker for a post-race positive of dextrorphan, the metabolite of a once-common ingredient in cough syrup, according to a copy of the ruling and racing officials.
