Churchill Downs warming up to historical racing machines

Churchill Downs Inc. would consider installing so-called historical racing machines at its Louisville, Ky., racetrack if a machine could be designed that was “competitive” with the more traditional slot machines offered at casinos in nearby Indiana, the company’s chief operating officer said Wednesday.

Speaking on a conference call to discuss the company’s 2016 financial results, COO Bill Mudd said Churchill was “working toward figuring out if we can make a better product” than the historical-racing machines already in use at three racetracks in Kentucky.

Sam Houston: Racehorses nearing retirement seek new homes

Sam Houston on Saturday will host an event showcasing racehorses nearing retirement to prospective buyers. The event will be in the saddling paddock starting at 10 a.m. Central. It is put on by the Paddock Foundation, a nonprofit rehoming and aftercare organization founded by the Texas Thoroughbred Association. The potential buyers negotiate purchases with the connections of the showcased horses.

Hawthorne tries all twilight cards for spring meet

STICKNEY, Ill. – Hawthorne Race Course starts off the 2017 Chicago racing season on Friday with the return of something old, the Illinois Derby, and the start of something new, regular twilight race cards.

All 22 of the scheduled racing programs at Hawthorne’s spring meet will have a first post of 4:10 p.m. Central. It’s a new wrinkle as Hawthorne tries to find the best niche for a racing product that has suffered from dwindling purse money in a generally troubled Illinois racing landscape.

Churchill Downs Inc. shows strong numbers in 2016

Churchill Downs Inc. had net income of $108.1 million in 2016 on record revenues of $1.31 billion, up sharply from net income in 2015 of $65.2 million on revenues of $1.21 billion, despite weak results at several of its racetracks and stagnating casino revenues, according to financial statements released late on Tuesday.

Prominent Ohio breeder George Smith dies at 84

George A. Smith, a prominent breeder and owner in Ohio for more than three decades, died in Kettering, Ohio, on Feb. 21 at age 84.

Smith and his business partner, dentist Wilbur Johnston, bought the 110-acre Woodburn Farm in Centerville, Ohio, in 1970. Over the next 35 years, they produced numerous stakes winners and state champions.

In 1988, 1993, and 2003, Smith and Johnston were honored as Ohio’s leading breeders.

Woodbine's HPItv to remain on air

A television network operated by Woodbine showing live feeds of races will remain on the air, the company announced Monday, reversing an earlier decision.

HPItv will relaunch Wednesday with the live feed of up to four tracks displayed simultaneously. The network, which operates as a television adjunct to Woodbine’s account-wagering service, will offer live feeds throughout the day and evening, Woodbine said.

Santa Anita: Single ticket carryover of $46,643 for Thursday's pick six

ARCADIA, Calif. - The pick six paid $39,192 to two ticketholders at Santa Anita on Sunday, resulting in a three-day carryover of $46,643 in the single ticket jackpot for Thursday’s eight-race program.

Thursday is the next day of live racing at Santa Anita.

The single ticket portion of the pool is paid out only if there is a single winning ticket in the pick six.

Sunday’s pick six began with a carryover of $29,846 in the single ticket jackpot pool. Bettors added $146,725 on Sunday.

Birzer collects career win 3,000 at Oaklawn

Jockey Alex Birzer reached a milestone of 3,000 career Thoroughbred wins in North America on Sunday, when he guided Numancia to a half-length victory in the sixth race at Oaklawn Park. He picked up the mount to add to the six horses he was named on Sunday.

Birzer became the 174th rider in North America to hit the milestone, Oaklawn announcer Vic Stauffer told the crowd Sunday.
