Second Summer takes Godolphin Mile; Sharp Azteca finishes third

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – Second Summer stormed up the inside of the muddy Meydan track to give trainer Doug Watson his second straight win in the Group 2, $1 million Godolphin Mile.

The German horse Ross was beaten a neck by the winner, with the American-based race favorite Sharp Azteca another three-quarters of a length back in third.

Mo Dont No honored as 2016 Ohio Horse of the Year

Mo Dont No, whose 11-race campaign as a 3-year-old produced eight victories and four stakes wins at distances ranging from six furlongs to 1 1/4 miles, was named 2016 Ohio Horse of the Year during the Ohio Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners dinner last Saturday night in Galloway, Ohio.

In addition, Mo Dont No, a son of Uncle Mo owned by the Looch Racing Stables of Ron Paolucci and trained by Jeff Radosevich, was voted Ohio’s champion 3-year-old and champion handicap horse.

Suffolk Downs sold to development firm; racing to continue through 2018

The owners of Suffolk Downs in East Boston, Mass., have reached an agreement to sell the track and its property to a real-estate development company, but live racing and simulcasting is expected to continue at the track through at least the end of 2018, according to officials.

Trainer Eduardo Ramirez has been fined $1,000 by the stewards at Delta Downs for his part in a incident involving two horses that raced under swapped identities, and the case has been referred to the Louisiana Racing Commission for additional penalties, according to rulings from the track.

Melancon undergoing physical therapy as he works to recover from stroke

Retired jockey Larry Melancon is undergoing twice-a-day physical therapy while continuing to recover in his hometown of Louisville, Ky., from the partial paralysis and other effects from a stroke he suffered earlier this month while vacationing in North Carolina.

Melancon’s wife, Denise, updated his condition last weekend in a lengthy Facebook post.

“He is a worker and tries very hard,” she wrote. “He still has the left-side paralysis … we are taking one day at a time.”

Santa Anita: Single ticket carryover of $346,241 for Thursday's pick six

ARCADIA, Calif. – The pick six single-ticket jackpot carryover at Santa Anita is $346,241.88 when racing resumes Thursday. There were 14 perfect tickets Sunday; the pick six paid $9,740.80. There were 366 tickets with five winners; the consolation payoff was $78.80.

 There was $252,167 wagered into the Sunday pick six; $163,585 was paid to winning bettors. There has not been a single-ticket jackpot winner for 15 racing days, since Feb. 20.

Santa Anita: Single ticket carryover of $317,374 for Sunday's pick six

ARCADIA, Calif. – A formful day of racing on Saturday at Santa Anita resulted in 101 winning pick six tickets worth $1,276.80 a copy, but did add to the ever-growing single-ticket jackpot carryover, which stands at $317,374.27 going into Sunday's card.

There was $289,904.62 in the single-ticket jackpot entering Saturday's card. The fresh money bet on Saturday totaled $239,959.

There were 1,616 tickets with 5 of 6, each worth $17.

There has not been a single-ticket jackpot winner for 14 racing days, since Feb. 20.

John Van de Kamp, former president of TOC, dies

John Van de Kamp became president of the Thoroughbred Owners of California in 1996.

John Van de Kamp, a former California attorney general who brought considerable credibility to the fledgling Thoroughbred Owners of California when he was hired as the organization’s second president, died on Tuesday at his home in Pasadena, Calif., following a brief illness, according to the TOC. Van de Kamp was 81.

Jill Byrne joins Breeders' Cup Ltd.

Jill Byrne, the director of broadcast and programming at Churchill Downs for the past nine years, has been hired by Breeders’ Cup Ltd. to be the organization’s senior director of industry relations, Breeders’ Cup announced on Thursday.

Byrne, who will be based at Breeders’ Cup’s Lexington, Ky., office, will focus on relations between Breeders’ Cup and nominators, owners, trainers, and sales companies, the organization said. She will also assist in recruitment efforts for U.S. and Canadian horses.

Delta Downs, Sam Houston crown meet title winners

Delta Downs in Vinton, La., and Sam Houston in neighboring Houston both recently concluded Thoroughbred meets. The title winners at Delta, which closed last Saturday, were jockey Diego Saenz, trainer Karl Broberg, and owner End Zone Athletics.

The title winners at Sam Houston, which closed Tuesday, were jockey Iram Diego, trainer Steve Asmussen and owner Jose Luis Espinoza.
