Lone Star, Sam Houston offer day programs on Preakness Day

Lone Star Park and Sam Houston will both have afternoon cards Saturday to complement the simulcast of the Preakness. Lone Star will start at 1:35 p.m. Central, while Sam Houston will get its Quarter Horse action underway at 1 p.m. Central.

 Sam Houston has a pair of notable stakes Saturday, the Grade 3, $70,020 Texas Juvenile Challenge and the $55,260 Texas Derby Challenge. The winners of the races earn berths into the respective Grade 2, $130,000 Juvenile Challenge Championship and Grade 3, $180,000 Derby Challenge Championship, both Oct. 14 at Prairie Meadows.

Aberdeen: Harold Sanderson Memorial Sprint heads opening-day card

 Patrons turning out for the season opener of the Northeast Area race meet at the Brown County Fairgrounds in Aberdeen, S.D., on Saturday will have a notable rooting interest in the Preakness. Steve Asmussen, who trains anticipated starters Hence and Lookin At Lee, is a native of Gettysburg, S.D.

 The South Dakota meet that opens Saturday will run five days over two weekends. It features races for Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses. Post is 1 p.m. Central.

Evangeline indefinitely postpones start of turf racing

 Evangeline Downs, which had delayed the start of turf racing this meet to a tentative date of Wednesday, May 24, will instead be off the grass indefinitely. The track announced on its latest overnight that it would be “off the turf course for an extended period.”

Judge clears way for Stronach Group's claim against Derby Wars

A federal judge has given the go-ahead to The Stronach Group to pursue a claim against a leading racing tournament site, Derby Wars, ruling that the site is an offtrack betting outlet that should be subject to the provisions of a federal law governing interstate wagering.

Louisiana purse subsidy bill withdrawn

A Louisiana lawmaker on Monday withdrew a bill that would have diverted $36 million from purse subsidies to a popular scholarship program, in an acknowledgement that the legislation would not pass out of a committee.

Jay Morris, a Republican representing a northern district of the state, voluntarily pulled the bill from consideration after members of the House Appropriations Committee raised objections to the legislation, citing the impact it could have on the racing industry in the state.

Santa Anita: Pick-six carryover of $136,859 for Thursday

ARCADIA, Calif.- A new racing week begins at Santa Anita on Thursday with a carryover of $136,859 in the single ticket jackpot pool of the $2 pick six.

There were 10 winning tickets in the pick six on Sunday when the bet returned $10,295. The single ticket portion of the pool has not been hit since May 4.

The winners of Sunday’s pick six races were Madam Dancealot ($6.40), Moments Notiz ($7.20), Scatterling ($5.60), Faypien ($7.40), Hay Dude ($9), and Avaudrey ($12.80).

Scatterling was the only winning favorite.

Gulfstream: Rainbow 6 carryover of $192,733 for Sunday

There is a Rainbow 6 jackpot carryover of $192,733 into Sunday’s card at Gulfstream Park. It is a 20-cent wager and it will run on races 5-10.

Gulfstream had offered a minimum guaranteed pool of $300,000 on Saturday. There were two live tickets into the final leg, one to 74-1 Home Power and the other to 80-1 Dublin Tinker, according to the track. Those horses finished a respective ninth and 11th to 8-1 winner Traffic Express.   

There were multiple 6-of-6 tickets, returning $15,375. The winning numbers were 7-3-10-9-2-1.

Zia hires Crawford as racing secretary

Matt Crawford has been named manager of racing operations and racing secretary at Zia Park in Hobbs, N.M., according to a press release from the track. Crawford also will remain the racing secretary at Sam Houston, where he oversees the meets for Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses.

Zia puts on a mixed meet for Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses. The 56-date season opens Sept. 9.

The track is seeking an announcer and a track superintendent for the upcoming season, according to a press release issued Thursday.

Racing Integrity Teams visiting Quarter Horse tracks

The American Quarter Horse Association announced Thursday it has been teaming with racetracks and racing commissions to send “Racing Integrity Teams” to Quarter Horse racing events. The teams’ tasks vary and include performing searches of barns, stalls, or cars, surveillance of horses, sharing intelligence, and other integrity-oriented duties.

Sam Houston hosted one of the teams during a recent weekend, and it was made up of investigators from five racing jurisdictions and the Texas Animal Health Commission.

Tampa Bay adds two Florida Sire Stakes to schedule

OLDSMAR, Fla. – Gulfstream Park’s loss is a gain for Tampa Bay Downs.

Tampa Bay Downs will host a pair of Florida Sire Stakes for the first time at its 2017-18 meet, with each seven-furlong race worth $125,000 and open to 3-year-olds sired by eligible Florida stallions. The FTBOA City of Ocala, for fillies, and the FTBOA Marion County, for colts and geldings, will be run Dec. 16. They will share a card with Tampa’s two $100,000, six-furlong stakes for 2-year-olds, the Inaugural, for males, and the Sandpiper, for fillies.
