Churchill Downs seeks approval for Instant Racing machines

Churchill Downs Inc. has asked the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission for approval to add devices resembling slot machines to its flagship racetrack in Louisville, according to an agenda distributed by the commission on Monday.

Golden Gate: Attendance, ontrack handle rise during winter-spring meet

For the first time since 2011, the Golden Gate Fields winter-spring meet showed increases in both attendance and ontrack handle, the track reported.

The 99-day meet concluded Sunday with a 5.65 percent increase in attendance, led by a 13 percent increase on the popular Dollar Day Sundays, and a 3.44 percent increase in ontrack handle.

Abel Cedillo won the jockey championship with 89 victories in the first extended meeting of the post-Russell Baze era.

Pleasanton opens fair season amid hope for better days

It is far from the best of times for California racing as the sport returns to its roots beginning Thursday, when the Northern California fair racing season starts with the Oak Tree at Pleasanton meeting.

The 12-day Pleasanton meeting runs through July 9 and is followed by fair meetings at Sacramento, Santa Rosa, Ferndale, a fall Oak Tree at Pleasanton meet, and Fresno.

OBS June sale posts gains in average, median

The Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. June 2-year-olds and horses of racing age sale rebounded in impressive fashion during its 2017 renewal, showing healthy growth in average and median sale prices after a down year in 2016.

A total of 428 juveniles and racing-age horses changed hands over the course of the two-day sale for revenues of $15,293,900, down 15 percent from last year’s four-day auction when 635 horses brought $18,077,400.

Belmont ratings down 15.6 percent

Viewership of Saturday’s Belmont Stakes broadcast on NBC and its digital platforms was down sharply from last year, according to figures provided by the network, as the race’s lack of star power took its toll.

Total viewership of the broadcast was 4.9 million, NBC said, down 15.6 percent from last year’s 5.8 million. The number counts those watching on television and on digital devices such as phones.

Mohawk to conduct year-round harness racing

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Woodbine Entertainment announced on Tuesday it will invest over $10 million in its Mohawk Racetrack so it can used for Standardbred racing year round. Woodbine Racetrack, which currently races Standardbreds in winter, will race only Thoroughbreds.
