Turf Sprint first Breeders' Cup Challenge race at Kentucky Downs

The winner of the Kentucky Downs Turf Sprint will receive a berth in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint.

The Grade 3 Kentucky Downs Turf Sprint has been selected as a Win and You’re In Breeders’ Cup Challenge Race, Kentucky Downs announced in a press release on Monday. The winner will receive a fees-paid berth to the Grade 1, $1 million Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint Nov. 2 at Santa Anita, as well as a travel stipend.

The Kentucky Downs Turf Sprint, run for $500,000 last year, will offer a $500,000 base purse, and up to an additional $200,000 from the Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund. This year’s race has been shortened from 6 ½ to 6 furlongs.

Major auction companies announce bisphosphonate-testing policy

Small uptick in fatal injuries in 2018, according to Equine Injury Database

With racehorse injuries in the national spotlight, The Jockey Club has released an analysis of data from the Equine Injury Database that shows a slight increase in fatal injuries at U.S. racetracks in 2018.

The data analysis showed an aggregated rate of fatal injury of 1.68 per 1,000 starts in 2018. In 2017, the corresponding rate was 1.61 per 1,000 starts.

City of Baltimore files suit seeking to keep Preakness at Pimlico

The City of Baltimore has filed a lawsuit against The Stronach Group that seeks to block the company from moving the Preakness Stakes from Pimlico Race Course and to thwart legislation that would allow the state to issue bonds to improve the company’s sister track in Maryland, Laurel Park, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Five stakes scheduled for March 22-24 have been moved to the weekend of March 29-31 when racing resumes.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Even while California racing gained clarity with the weekend announcement that Santa Anita would reopen on March 29, headwinds will continue.

On Sunday at Santa Anita, officials and horsemen expressed satisfaction at medication and safety reforms agreed to by track owner The Stronach Group and the Thoroughbred Owners of California. Those include a gradual phase-out of race-day Lasix instead of the initial proposal of an outright ban.

ARCADIA, Calif. – The future of horse racing at Santa Anita Park remained uncertain as of Saturday. No one knows when the track will reopen for racing.

Santa Anita was to reopen this coming Friday following a suspension of more than two weeks after a rash of equine fatalities and the reexamination of the racing surface. The reopening date has been postponed after the surprise announcement Thursday concerning the use of race-day Lasix.

Breeders' Cup says 2019 event remains set for Santa Anita

Santa Anita's parent company, The Stronach Group, announced a Lasix ban and whip restrictions on Thursday.

The Breeders’ Cup remains committed to running its two-day event at Santa Anita this year despite the deaths of 22 horses at the track since its meet opened on Dec. 26 and the outcry surrounding the deaths, a spokesman for the organization said on Friday.

“We have not changed our commitment to holding our event at Santa Anita later this year,” said spokesman Jim Gluckson.

With the immediate future of racing at Santa Anita uncertain, so too is the running of the Santa Anita Handicap, which has been run every year since 1945.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Santa Anita horsemen voiced a range of opinions following the surprise announcement Thursday that Lasix will be disallowed at California racetracks owned by The Stronach Group.

Some favored the action, some were against, and others questioned the timing. Most acknowledged being off guard when Belinda Stronach, TSG chairman and president, declared in an open letter “zero tolerance for race-day medication at Santa Anita Park and Golden Gate Fields.”
