Association of Racing Commissioners International proposes stringent penalties for deliberate doping

The Association of Racing Commissioners International has circulated a draft proposal of rules that would sharply increase the penalties for drug violations that are considered deliberate attempts to administer a performance-enhancing substance or one that would put a horse’s welfare at risk.

TAA seeks input from industry on aftercare

The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA) has launched an online survey to gauge Thoroughbred industry participants’ views on Thoroughbred aftercare.

The survey, accessible through the TAA's website, is intended for use by any industry participants, including breeders, owners, trainers, horseplayers, and fans. The survey is expected to take less than 15 minutes to complete and asks participants about their level of awareness about the TAA and its mission to accredit and support aftercare organizations.

Mickey Walls, Josie Carroll, Lexie Lou join Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Jockey Mickey Walls and trainer Josie Carroll are among the 2019 inductees into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame. 

Walls began riding professionally at age 16 in 1990 at Vancouver’s Exhibition Park before concluding that year at Greenwood in Toronto and garnering his first Sovereign Award as Canada’s outstanding apprentice. In 1991, Walls won a record 231 races in Ontario and garnered his second straight apprentice Sovereign, along with honors as the top jockey in Canada. He was also voted the Eclipse Award for outstanding apprentice that year.

National Handicapping Championship moves to Bally's for 2020

The National Handicapping Championship will return to Bally’s Las Vegas next year after more than a decade of being hosted by other Las Vegas casinos, according to the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, which administers the annual tournament.

Mahoning Valley, Penn National switch to GPS timing

Mahoning Valley Race Course in Ohio and Penn National Race Course in Pennsylvania have installed GPS timing systems and will use those systems as their official timers, the developer of the system announced on Tuesday.

The two racetracks, both owned by Penn National Gaming Inc., join four other tracks to have installed the system since last year. The system was developed by Equibase with a partner, Total Performance Data, which runs GPS timing systems at a dozen racetracks in the United Kingdom. Equibase is the racing industry’s official data supplier.

John Bell, jockey turned agent, dies at 79

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Former jockey and prominent jockey agent John Bell died Sunday after a battle with cancer at 79.

Bell won back-to-back runnings of the marathon Valedictory Handicap on Knight’s Turn in 1979 and 1980 at Greenwood. As an agent, he had the most success with multiple Sovereign Award winner Todd Kabel, who won the Queen’s Plate twice. Among the other riders he represented were Chantal Sutherland, David Moran, and Neil Poznansky, who was voted the Eclipse Award as North America’s top apprentice in 1996.

CHRB cancels special meeting on Santa Anita dates

A special meeting scheduled for Friday at which the California Horse Racing Board had been set to discuss the potential to move race dates from Santa Anita has been canceled, the racing board announced Monday.

Instead, the board announced, the Santa Anita discussion will be part of the agenda for the board's regularly scheduled monthly meeting on April 18. That meeting, like the one scheduled for Friday, will take place at Santa Anita.

Ten days are required to post an agenda item for a board meeting, so Monday was the deadline for this change.

Handle on U.S. races during the first quarter of 2019 fell 3.5 percent, in part due to a 2.83 percent decline in March, when Santa Anita Park in Southern California canceled nearly three weeks of racing due to concerns over a spate of fatalities at the track, according to figures released on Friday by Equibase.
