Robert Dupret Derby at Santa Rosa fails to fill, rescheduled for Sunday

The $50,000 Robert Dupret Derby at Santa Rosa did not attract enough horses to be run as scheduled on Saturday and has been rescheduled for Sunday.

Racing secretary Bob Moreno said he will be contacting several Southern California-based trainers in hopes of attracting enough horses to run the 1 1/16-mile turf stakes for 3-year-olds.

There is a Quarter Horse stakes race on Saturday's card at Santa Rosa, the $8,000 PCQHRA Handicap at 350 yards. Snowy Cornitas, who has won a stakes at Pleasanton and one at Sacramento in his last two starts, may be the favorite.

West Virginia gaming advocate Roger Ramey dies at 85

Roger Ramey, a longtime advocate of racing and gambling in West Virginia, died on Thursday morning at his home in Winchester, Va., according to a former employer. Ramey was 85.

Ramey served the last 20 years of his career in various management positions at Charles Town Races in West Virginia. While at the track, Ramey pushed for the legalization of slot-machine gambling at West Virginia racetracks, and, following that successful effort, led another push for the legalization of table games. That, too, was successful.

Churchill plans to build hotel, casino at track

Plans call for a hotel and casino to be built around the first turn at Churchill Downs.

Churchill Downs Inc. plans to build a hotel and a casino at its Louisville track, according to its chief executive officer, with details of the project to be announced later this year.

William Carstanjen, the CEO, said on a conference call Thursday morning that the hotel and casino will be located around the first turn of the racetrack. While Carstanjen did not provide significant details about the project, he said the company plans to have construction completed by the 2021 Kentucky Derby, held each year on the first Saturday of May.

Jockey Club denies stub book privileges to Janine and Warren Winslow

The Jockey Club will deny stud book privileges beginning next year to Janine and Warren Winslow, two Texas-based owners and trainers.

In a statement, the Jockey Club said the decision was made for “knowingly misrepresenting and/or aiding in the misrepresentation of information in connection with communications to The Jockey Club on multiple separate occasions.” The Jockey Club does not elaborate on reasons for denying stud-book privileges.

Charles Town purses get a big bump

Charles Town will increase its purses by approximately 17 percent beginning Aug. 8 as the result of legislation that will return money to the track that was diverted to the West Virginia workers' compensation program in the mid-2000s.

Purses for maiden races at Charles Town will climb from $23,000 to $27,000, or 17 percent, due to the increase. Allowance and claiming races will increase from 12 percent to 22 percent.

Julie Krone to be given Laffit Pincay Jr. Award

Julie Krone, shown at her Hall of Fame induction, will receive the Laffit Pincay Jr. Award on Aug. 17 at Del Mar.

DEL MAR, Calif. – Hall of Fame jockey Julie Krone has been named the 16th winner of the Laffit Pincay Jr. Award, which honors those who have served racing with “integrity, extraordinary dedication, determination and distinction,” it was announced by Del Mar on Saturday.

Krone will be presented with the award by the award’s namesake, a fellow Hall of Famer, at Del Mar on Aug. 17, the day of the Grade 1, $1 million Pacific Classic. Krone won the Pacific Classic in 2003 on Candy Ride.
