Trainer John Martin hit with six-month medication suspension

Northern California trainer John Martin has been suspended six months and fined $20,000 after three of his runners tested positive for the banned medication ergoloid mesylates at the Big Fresno Fair in 2018 and at Golden Gate Fields in March.

Martin was suspended for a year, but six months of the penalty will be stayed provided he has no serious medication violations during a one-year probation period, according to a statement issued by the California Horse Racing Board on Tuesday.

Keeneland, Sky Sports Racing reach agreement

Keeneland has reached a deal with Sky Sports Racing in Britain that will give the company exclusive rights to the track’s racing signal and its sales broadcasts in the U.K. for the next three years, Keeneland officials said on Wednesday.

KHRC tabs Howard as interim equine medical director

The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission has elevated its chief veterinarian to the position of interim equine medical director as it continues to search for a replacement for Dr. Mary Scollay.

Dr. Bruce Howard, the chief veterinarian for the KHRC since 2016, will fill the position on an interim basis “effective immediately,” the KHRC said in a release. He will continue to fulfill the duties associated with the chief veterinarian position as interim director, the KHRC added.

Handle jumps at Churchill September meet

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – All-sources handle at the September meet that ended Sunday at Churchill Downs averaged more than $4.85 million per card, up 17.6 percent over the corresponding 2018 meet, according to figures released Monday by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission.

Gross handle at the 11-day meet that began Sept. 13 was $53,411,529, up by the same percentage over the September meet last year, when 11 dates also were run. Ontrack handle figures were not immediately available.

3-year-old euthanized at Santa Anita after injuring leg

ARCADIA, Calif. - Emtech, a 3-year-old colt, sustained a fatal injury to his right foreleg in a one-horse spill in the stretch of Saturday’s eighth race at Santa Anita, according to a statement released by the track.

The incident will be the subject of an “immediate review,” the statement said.

Jockey Mario Gutierrez walked into an ambulance with the aid of medical personnel after being examined on the track. Gutierrez later took off his final mount of the day.

Retired rider David Pettinger dies at 66

David Pettinger, a retired jockey whose brother, Don Pettinger, followed him into race riding, died Sunday in Eads, Colo., according to family members. He was 66.

Equibase website back to almost 100 percent following attacks

Equibase, the industry’s racing and breeding database, has restored its website’s capabilities to nearly 100 percent following attacks that began last late week that shut down some of the site’s services, according to company officials.

The attacks, which began on Thursday, disabled the site’s statistical section, which includes leaderboards and profile pages for horses, jockeys, owners, and trainers, according to the company. In a statement, the company attributed the problems to “a high volume of malicious activity.”

Arlington stewards revoke E.T. Baird's jockey license

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - Edward “E.T.” Baird’s jockey’s license has been revoked by stewards at Arlington.

In an official ruling dated Sept. 13, 2019, Baird was cited for violation of Illinois Racing Board rule 508.30 B, whereby a licensed individual is to be suspended for refusing to submit to a stewards’ request to take a breathalyzer test. Baird was penalized under rule 508.40 D, fourth violation of the breathalyzer test rule, which mandates license revocation.
