Fixed-odds bets could be ready for Monmouth meet

Fixed-odds bets are likely to be offered this year on races from Monmouth Park in New Jersey under an agreement the track’s operator has signed with an Australian bookmaking company, according to the parties involved.

The 10-year agreement will allow the Australian company, BetMakers, to offer fixed-odds bets on races at Monmouth in New Jersey and market fixed-odds betting on the Monmouth signal to other jurisdictions in the U.S. and worldwide. Fixed-odds betting became legal in New Jersey when the state authorized sports betting in 2018.

Brothers hired as strategic advisor for Thoroughbred Safety Coalition

Donna Brothers, the former jockey and NBC reporter, has been hired by the Thoroughbred Safety Coalition as a strategic advisor, the organization announced on Monday.

The hiring of Brothers was announced four days after the coalition’s steering committee held its first meeting since the organization was formed in November of last year to devise strategies to reduce injuries at racetracks. According to the announcement, Brothers will “bring decades of rich experience in multiple facets of the industry” to the coalition’s efforts.

Zayat asks court to rescind receivership order

Attorneys for Ahmed Zayat have filed a motion with a Fayette County court in Kentucky to dissolve an order issued last week that placed Zayat’s horse operation in receivership, claiming that the court was biased by Zayat’s lack of representation at a hearing that left the court with a “strongly skewed version of events.”

Glorious Journey improved during 2019 after trainer Charlie Appleby cut him back to distances less than one mile, and the good European form he showed last year transferred to Dubai on Thursday night.

Making his Meydan debut, Glorious Journey led an Appleby one-two-three in the Group 2, $250,000 Al Fahidi Fort, beating Mythical Magic by three-quarters of a length. Mythical Magic was runner-up in the Al Fahidi Fort for the second year in a row, while Appleby-trained Mubtasim finished another length back in third.

CHRB passes rule to limit drug levels in post-training tests

The California Horse Racing Board on Wednesday passed a motion that would put in place threshold levels for commonly used painkillers for horses that are conducting training exercises, as part of a suite of new rules intended to reduce injuries and fatalities of horses and address concerns from critics of the sport.
