The pick four at Del Mar on Friday begins with a wide-open event in Race 5 but closes with a horse who looks like a standout in Race 8. I am going to build a ticket around (2) URLOVENEVERFAILS. The 3-year-old filly just missed when she debuted in a California-bred maiden special weight race at Santa Anita on June 19, and she figures to take a big step forward with a race behind her.
“Another beautiful day at Del Mar where the weather is pretty much the same every day of the year.”
So said the cab driver as he drove me to my hotel just outside the track a couple of years ago. Just like with the nearby Pacific Ocean, where the water is just the right temperature, I think we can jump into the first race and hope to start the day off on a good roll.
Race 1
I think it’s worth a shot to key (3) Last One Standing (ML 4-1).
Delaware Park, Del Mar, and Indiana Grand have the stakes spotlight Saturday. Delaware has the richest race of the weekend in the Grade 1, $750,000 Delaware Handicap.
This is the first Saturday of the Del Mar meet, and that is the site of the weekend’s other Grade 1 event, the $400,000 Eddie Read.
Indiana Grand has a stakes-packed card led by the Grade 2, $500,000 Indiana Derby.

Lilly's Goldie (#7, ML 5-1) makes her first start for trainer Nicholas Gonzalez in Wednesday's sixth race at Woodbine, a seven-furlong maiden special weight race. Since Jan. 1, 2014, Gonzalez is winning at a 31 percent clip when saddling a horse making its first start with him, for a return on investment of $4.86.
Academy Bay (#2, ML 5-2) returns in Wednesday's ninth race at Indiana Grand, the one-mile Snack Stakes on turf. It will be his first start since finishing first by 3/4 lengths in an optional claimer May 12 at Indiana Grand. The second- and third-place finishers from that race came back to win their next starts.

LAND OVER SEA
Trainer: Doug O’Neill
Last race: July 12, 3rd
Finish: 2nd by 1 3/4
Beyer: 58
This 2-year-old debut filly was not quick from the gate, in traffic into and through much of the stretch, and finished with run in a better-than-looked debut.
MOON DOGGIE
Trainer: Scott Fairlie
Last race: July 11, 6th
Finish: 5th by 1 1/2
Beyer: 33
He battled for the lead before dropping back and was boxed in through the stretch when he debuted in a five-furlong maiden special weight race for Ontario-sired 2-year-olds. The son of freshman sire Spaniard is well bred on the dam’s side and appears to have some potential.
