Before we get to the Saturday notes, here are a few thoughts about a topic I’ve been mulling over recently:
Since we’re feeling adventurous, let’s strategize a play for Sunday’s pick five at the Big B.
Race 1 – SUPER SURPRISE (2) and FROSTY MARGARITA (3) will vie for favoritism in the Joseph A. Gimma, while SURPRISE CAMEO (4) has a chance to control the early pace.
A – 2, 3
B – 4
ARCADIA, Calif. – Bettors probably cannot wait to double their money banging a daily double on races 7-8 on Saturday at Santa Anita, right?
Wow, the $2 double from Beholder to Songbird might actually pay $4.
That is the problem with big days such as Saturday at Santa Anita, where five Grade 1 races are scheduled. The racing will be top class. The gambling is a different story. It is tough to find value when the favorites “can’t lose.”
As it turns out, last week’s Pick may have come in a key race. Our two top Pix, Seymourdini and King Kranz, completed a meager $16 exacta and $49 trifecta, respectively, with the winner Mohaymen, who was not a BreezeFigs horse but whom we had analyzed biomechanically as a yearling and found to be of very good quality (see our website link below for further explanation). In any case, we felt good about how our Pix did because they were in the picture at the end, with the rest of the field still in Queens

ON THE SHEET
Last race: Sept. 19, 2nd
Finish: 5th by 6 1/4
Beyer: 46
She broke outward, giving the others about a three-length head-start before passing a few rivals on the outside and then galloping out well in her five-furlong debut. The daughter of freshman sire Gayego should be better for the experience.
COMMENT: Recepta has always had ability but she appears to have put it all together. Coming off an easy win in a restricted stakes at Saratoga last month, she ran splendidly again here to notch her first graded stakes win. She bided her time early as longshot Miss Frost set a solid pace, began to advance going into the far turn, stayed wide and clear, surged to the lead by midstretch and fended off a Lady Lara.
By winning Saturday’s Grade 1 Cotillion at Parx, I’m a Chatterbox spared us all a potential Eclipse Award debate that given the nature of things today, likely would have turned vicious and ugly.
The 3-year-old filly division historically has been the property of dirt performers. Of course, it wasn’t long ago that one would have said the same thing about the older male division. But the last four older male Eclipse Award winners – Acclamation in 2011, Wise Dan in 2012 and 2013, and Main Sequence in 2014 – did not win a single race on dirt in those championship seasons.
We’ll take a shot at Sunday’s early pick four as follows:
RACE 2 – ATTRACTIVE RIDE (6) shoots for a fourth straight win but could get some pace pressure, in which case STAR OF NEW YORK (1), COLLIN’S SMILE (2) and/or MCKENZIES WAY (5) could come into the picture late.
A – 6
B – 1
C – 2, 5
