Fairly large and competitive fields (9x10x8x11) with some vulnerable-looking morning-line favorites make Saturday’s $200,000 guaranteed late pick four worth delving into.

Trainer Efren Loza Jr. saddles Salt and Pepper (#2, ML 4-1) in Friday's seventh race at Gulfstream Park, a six-furlong maiden claimer. Since Jan. 1, 2014, Loza is winning at a 50 percent clip when saddling a horse making its first start, for a return on investment of $3.89. 

Possible keys to a late pick three (races 6-8) are horse who likes it here and looks back on his game with blinkers and a filly with a ton of upside who figures a generous price.

The late pick three at Gulfstream Park on Saturday afternoon is comprised of three ungraded stakes events, and I’ll be taking a small swing at the sequence.

Race 9 (South Beach)

There are some exceptionally fast 2-year-old fillies around the country, but none of them is running in the Starlet at Los Alamitos on Saturday. The winning Beyer Figure in this race is likely to be about an 80, not exactly Grade 1 caliber.

Treasuring would appear to have a tactical edge as potential lone speed on the rail. But the only time she got a clear lead in four starts, she got just a 74 Beyer, so she does not inspire much confidence.

With 2-year-olds being less experienced and less battle-tested than older horses, races for these young horses understandably are filled with more unknown variables.

We have a Grade 1 stakes race Saturday, the $300,000 Starlet at Los Alamitos. On the other side of the nation, Gulfstream Park offers four $100,000 stakes, including the Grade 3 Rampart.

El Prado Stakes

Trainer Ramon Preciado saddles Visionary Ruler (#6, ML 5-2) in Wednesday's seventh race at Aqueduct, a six-furlong claiming race on the inner track.  Since Jan., 1, 2014, Preciado is winning at a 39 percent clip when saddling a horse switching from turf to dirt, for a return on investment of $3.10.
