Linda Rice’s talented gelding Championofthenile is clearly the horse to beat, but it’s fair to wonder whether we’re going to see his best performance in his first start back off a lengthy layoff. Furthermore, he’s going to have to deal with pace pressure from True Bet as well as potential speeds Giantinthemoonlite and Big Zip. While I’ll use this favorite defensively, I see two viable alternatives at decent prices.

The New Year's Day card features Arrogate as he starts a heavy favorite in the Grade 2 San Pasqual Stakes. That race doesn't seem like an appetizing betting proposition, and the uncertain weather and resulting track conditions could affect the scheduled turf races.

Thus, I'll plan on playing very lightly and focus on two horses that should run well, rain or shine.

A number of wide-open turf contests make many of the multirace wagers at Gulfstream attractive on Saturday, and in the end, I settled on a pick four that begins with the eighth race. What follows is an analysis of the sequence and a TicketMaker play.

Was off about a length slowly before rushing up last time.

Forced the pace to collapse in a race dominated by closers.

Jan’s Reserve (#4)

The most appealing wagering opportunities on an expected rainy Saturday at Santa Anita are sandwiched smack in the middle of the program – a low-level claiming filly at 10-1, and a stretch-out maiden at 8-1.

The card includes three stakes with good horses at unattractive odds. Jimmy Bouncer is poised to win the Midnight Lute Stakes (race 3), but 5-2 in a small field is no bargain. Similarly, Arles is legit in the Robert J. Frankel Stakes (race 4), but 2-1 is low.
