Rampellini: Oaklawn Horses to Watch for Jan. 18

Big Tire

Trainer: Genaro Garcia

Last Race: Jan. 16, 1st

Finish: 9th by 9 1/2

Beyer: 58

Claimed for $7,500 out of a route, he broke from the 12-hole and was never involved as the favorite. It was a rare wet-track start for the horse, and a rare off race for runner who generally puts up Beyer Speed Figures in the 70s and 80s. Earlier in his career, he was fifth in the Santa Anita Derby won by California Chrome.

Peck: Tampa Bay horses to watch for week of Jan. 16

COLONY CROSSING
Trainer: Anthony Granitz
Last race: Jan. 1, 8th
Finish: 3rd by 5
Beyer: 66
Did well to get the show with a late run in a race that lacked speed and was controlled by the front-runners. Can run down the right group back at this same level, especially given an improved race flow.

Beer: Aqueduct horses to watch for week of Jan. 16

No Hayne No Gayne
Trainer:  Steve Asmussen
Last race:  Jan. 14, 2nd
Finish:  4th by 5 1/2
Beyer:  59
Three-year-old filly endured a tough trip on a four-wide chase vs. a solid field of maidens, over a track that was strongly slanted toward the inside. That she managed to get into contention and then hold her ground all through the stretch sugggests that she may not be a maiden for long.

Free: Santa Anita horses to watch for week of Jan. 16

YAVRIG
Trainer: Jorge Periban
Last race: Jan. 13, 4th
Finish: 2nd by 1 1/2
Beyer: 68
A claiming filly eligible to non-winners of two, she finished seven clear of third in her first race off the claim by Periban. She is a threat right back, and double-tough on a wet track.

Illman: How I'll play Gulfstream for Sunday, Jan. 15

It should be a pretty quiet Sunday afternoon at Gulfstream Park with no stakes races on tap.

The plan is to play a Pick 3 (races 5 through 7) with a single in the middle leg.

TimeformUS Aqueduct Horses in Focus for Monday, Jan. 16, 2017

Race 3:
Matinee Babe (#5)

Did not run badly in her lone dirt start despite encountering traffic at the top of the stretch.
Should appreciate the turnback to a sprint distance.
David Cannizzo gets a 78 TimeformUS Trainer Rating with runners going from turf to dirt.
8-1 on ML
