Bernier: How I'll play Keeneland for Sunday, April 23

I believe the middle portion of Sunday's card at Keeneland is intriguing - specifically races 5 through 7. I have strong opinions in races 5 and 6, and I'll look to hook them up with some sort of reasonable price in the third and final leg of this pick three sequence.

RACE 5

IRST (4) makes his second lifetime start for Todd Pletcher and his first since Saratoga last summer. He returns at about seven furlongs, and based on his pedigree and running style he shouldn't have a problem off the bench.

RACE 6

King: Laurel Park pick four for Saturday, April 22

Fans of turf racing and multirace wagers get the best of both worlds with the late pick four at Laurel on Saturday, with the card’s final four races that make up the pick-four sequence all offering large fields racing on the grass. Now, let’s hope the weather will cooperate.

Peck: Keeneland pick four for Saturday, April 22

Saturday's late pick four at Keeneland is a typically playable sequence, with the opening leg seemingly the most manageable. Hopefully, anyway ...

RACE 7: WESTFEST is in for a tag for the first time, and he fits the race nicely on the strength of his Beyer Speed Figures. His early speed is another edge, as there's not a lot of speed in here and he may be able to capitalize on the pace scenario with a forward trip.

Peck: Pick four for Charles Town Classic card

The Grade 2 Charles Town Classic is the centerpiece of Charles Town’s Saturday card (and meet), with Stanford the 8-5 morning-line favorite. But if you can beat him – and that's what this ticket will try to do – the value will be there.

Race 5

Roll Tide Roll (#4)

Raced four wide on the turn last time before re-rallying to nearly get up for second.

Should get a more aggressive ride from Mike Luzzi in a race lacking much pace.

Chris Englehart gets a 94 TimeformUS Trainer Rating when running horses back in 8 to 14 days.

5-1 on ML

Race 4:

No Entiendo (#4)
The likely favorite, Condo King, looks especially vulnerable coming off a layoff for Rudy Rodriguez, who does not do well in these situations.
No Entiendo was unwisely rated last time and went extremely wide around the far turn.
Gets a positive rider switch to Hector Diaz.
8-1 on ML

King: Upon further review, take Bigger Picture in Elkhorn

Coady Photography
Bigger Picture can handle the soft turf he is likely to encounter in the Elkhorn at Keeneland.

In handicapping Saturday’s Grade 2, $250,000 Elkhorn Stakes at Keeneland, my first reaction was to pick Red Rifle.

He was a troubled third in his seasonal debut at Gulfstream Park in a stakes-quality allowance, and in looking at his entire race record in DRF Formulator, I noticed a close second-place finish in the 2014 Sycamore at Keeneland over soft ground, conditions that could reappear Saturday with steady rain forecast.
