BreezeFigs Quick-Pix for Saturday, June 24, 2017, by Bob Fierro & Jay Kilgore

Second week in a row one of our Pix didn’t run—the races at Belmont were cancelled just before They Shot Sonny was scheduled to run. However, by then our 2-year-old Pick, Mel’s Gone Wild, had buried her field for a generous $5.20 payoff at Parx.  Both BreezeFigs age brackets scored big time in maiden races last week. There were a dozen 3-year-olds that won and eight juveniles.

King: As lone speed in short field, Lull enticing in Wild Applause Stakes

Barbara D. Livingston
Lull will be racing a shorter distance, 5 1/2 furlongs, in the Bolton Landing Stakes than trainer Christophe Clement would like.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Usually, a battle-tested, lone-speed horse proves the darling of the betting public. But exceptions occasionally arise, usually when such a horse is matched against another type of runner whom the public adores even more: a hyped horse.

Weekend Warrior for Saturday, June 24: Picks for Ohio Derby, Chicago Handicap, Jersey Shore Stakes

Barbara D. Livingston
Irap worked a mile in 1:44 at Keeneland on Friday.

NEW YORK – With a very light stakes schedule for a summer Saturday, the Grade 3, $500,000 Ohio Derby at Thistledown is easily the richest race of the day. Santa Anita has a Grade 3, $100,000 stakes doubleheader with the Affirmed and Precisionist, but while the Precisionist is interesting, both races drew fields of only five. The only other graded stakes on Saturday is the Grade 3, $100,000 Chicago Handicap at Churchill Downs.

Lightly raced gelding finished a very good second behind the talented Diversify when switched to dirt last year prior to enduring a long layoff, and he returned with an even better effort when demolishing maidens without having to get down to serious business in his 4-year-old debut.
