Ran better than it seems last time as he closed into a slow pace while racing wide against a rail bias.

Not a lot of meat on this Sunday card at Santa Anita. No single horse appeals to me and both pick four sequences intersperse short fields and inscrutable collections of horses. There’s barely more than zero chance for a robust payoff in the early pick four, but at least I feel like I can manage that sequence better than the late one. So here goes.

Race 5: Blue Atlas (#2)

Has faced much tougher competition in all of her 2018 turf starts.

Should be sitting in the right spot just in behind Awsum Roar if that one falters.

Runs her best career races at Belmont Park and this is probably her best distance.

Race 8: Pas de Soucis (#8)

One of my preferred-angle plays takes place Sunday at Keeneland in the fifth race, which drew a second-time starter who was well backed but went unplaced in her debut.  

Mo Dixie went off at 7-2 odds when unveiled at Saratoga on Aug. 31. Slow to get into stride, she raced in last and managed to pass only tired horses in the lane in finishing a non-threatening fifth – a loss this handicapper believes was caused by inexperience, at least in part.

It's Maryland Million Day at Laurel, and as usual, it's a very interesting card. Here's a look at the 50-cent pick four starting with race 5:

There are two price horses on New York-bred Day at Belmont Park whom I’m intrigued with, and I’ll look to play them in different fashions. Overnight rain in the Elmont, N.Y., area has removed two races from the turf, so it’s very likely that the stakes that are staying on grass will be run on less-than-firm going – something that should help one of my horses.
