Race 7: English Soul (#1)

The Pace Projector is predicting that she will be on the lead in a situation favoring the front-runner.

Ran very well off the layoff, showing a willingness to pass horses that wasn’t always on display last year.

Is probably best on the turf despite having never won on this surface.

Illman: How I'd play Saratoga on Sunday, July 28, 2019

We're fast and firm to kick off the Sunday Saratoga card, but there is a forecast for rain in the afternoon that might impact some turf racing as well as the featured Amsterdam Stakes.

Here are some horses of interest on the program:

Hersh: Del Mar late pick five play for Saturday, July 27, 2019

Two bets on the second half of the July 27 Del Mar card, featuring the Bing Crosby Stakes, race 8. I’m playing the Bing Crosby to melt down with too much heat on the front end. LINE JUDGE (#4) is the one I like best and I’ll bet $25 to win on him, while doubling up in the late pick five.

Here’s the rest of that pick five play with a few notes.

Race 1: Cleon Jones (#4)

Was slow into stride in his debut, putting him a difficult position behind a slow pace.

Got bet heavily first time out, suggesting that a far better performance was expected.

Jeremiah Englehart gets a 98 TimeformUS Trainer Rating with second-time starters.

Race 4: Kowlaski (#5)

Made an eye-catching wide move into contention before flattening out in his debut.

Was compromised by a slow pace last time, indicated by blue color-coded pace figures.

D. Wayne Lukas rarely cranks horses up to win first time out, so he figures to improve second time out.

BreezeFigs Quick-Pix for Saturday, July 27, 2019 by Bob Fierro & Jay Kilgore

Our split division 2-year-old Pix last week came up with a decent exacta in the first division as Magnanimous got up in the last jump to finish second. But the second division Pick, Merveilleux, not only got off badly but after a half-hearted rally on the turn was basically eased and walked off; hope she’s OK.

Race 2: Assault Breaker (#8)

Is bred to handle turf as a half-brother to 4-time turf winner Wild About Harry.

Ran like a horse that would appreciate added ground in his debut.

DRF Formulator Fact: Over the past five years, Jonathan Thomas is 10 for 22 (45%, $3.62 ROI) with second-time starting maidens on the turf.
