So this is how it went with our 3-year-olds Pick: One was scratched at the gate, the other barely got out of the gate and is probably still running. Then our 2-year-old Pick showed high speed early but ran out of gas late and there you go. In the meantime, eight other BreezeFigs 3-year-olds broke their maidens at Belmont, Fort Erie, Fonner Park, Keeneland, Los Alamitos (three, all on Sunday) and Prairie Meadows. The 2-year-olds are revving up with three of them breaking their maidens last week at Belmont, Gulfstream and Keeneland.

Day 4 of the five-day Keeneland July meet is excellent. Even the short-field Ashland holds intrigue, with at least two very good fillies, Venetian Harbor and Speech, battling, and Envoutante out to give trainer Kenny McPeek a sweep of the card’s big 3-year-old races, the Ashland and Blue Grass. McPeek and owner Peter Callahan boldly try the filly Swiss Skydiver in the Blue Grass, angling for a Kentucky Derby option in a Grade 2 race against males rather than a first Grade 1 win in a short field of fillies.
