Well, here we are, last Saturday of 2020, our year of discontent, and for all that is troubling in the world, the day after Christmas is a gift for horseplayers and racing fans.
Stakes racing abounds from coast to coast, with multi-stakes programs at Laurel, Gulfstream, and Fair Grounds, all of those overshadowed by a gilt-edged program at Santa Anita.

Depending on how you played them, you might have gotten lucky with last week’s Pick as three BreezeFigs colts finished third, fourth and fifth to complete a trifecta, superfecta and super five. Ironically, at the same track (Gulfstream) the next day there was a BreezeFigs superfecta that was playable, one of 11 races during the week that were won by 2-year-old BreezeFigs maidens. Four others came at Gulfstream with solos at Aqueduct, Laurel, Los Alamitos, Parx, Tampa and Turfway. As fir the 3-year-olds, twoi won at Los Alamitos and another at Aqueduct.

Beauty Generation, one of the greatest champions in the history of Hong Kong horse racing, has retired.
Twice crowned Hong Kong’s Horse of the Year, the New Zealand-bred gelding was also named Champion Miler a record three times. Beauty Generation ends his career with 18 Hong Kong wins from 34 starts and prize-money earnings of HK$106,233,750, making him the highest-ever earner in Hong Kong history.
The most interesting stakes race this weekend is one that for many will prove essentially unplayable. The Tenacious Stakes is only a middling $75,000 race Saturday at Fair Grounds, and it likely will have an odds-on favorite, but that horse, Maxfield, makes his first race after a seven-month layoff and remains a lightly raced colt with star potential.
Fair Grounds has five other stakes on its Saturday card, several eminently playable, while Gulfstream Park serves up a surprisingly strong renewal of the Mr. Prospector. Let’s start there.
