Got the New Year off right but we certainly didn’t expect our Pick Breakfastatbonnies to bury her field at Aqueduct like she did, but we’ll take it at $6.80 anyway! She was one of 11 newly-turned 3-year-old BreezeFigs maidens to win during the week, with six of them coming at Gulfstream (including a BreezeFigs exacta). The other solos came at Fair Grounds, Laurel, Tampa and Turfway. Add four stakes winners and it was a pretty good start to what will hopefully be a better year.
Next Saturday, Jan. 16, comes the first semi-important card of 2021, the Road to the Derby Kickoff Day at Fair Grounds, a multi-stakes extravaganza featuring the Lecomte Stakes, the two-turn debut for the promising Juddmonte Farms homebred Mandaloun.
This weekend comes a minimal national stakes schedule, with just a handful of black-type races on the North American menu. Still, the three graded stakes all hold some degree of appeal.

Last race: Jan. 1, race 5
Finish: 4th by 4 1/4

Older special-weight maiden ran best race since he was gelded last spring. Broke from rail, dueled inside on fast pace, tired. Would be tough in $50k maiden-claiming sprint.
