Robby Albarado obtains court order to resume riding; shifts tack to Arlington

Jockey Robby Albarado, who was suspended by the Kentucky Horse Racing Board while awaiting trial in connection with a domestic violence charge, was granted a temporary restraining order by a Kentucky judge Friday. The judge’s order allows Albarado to begin riding again, which he intends to do next week at Arlington Park in Illinois.

Judge Thomas Wingate of Franklin Circuit Court issued the order, which will remain in place until the racing commission provides certain records sought by Albarado’s lawyer and an administrative hearing is held.

DRF/NTRA National Handicapping Championship creates 'best bet' designation

Participants in the annual National Handicapping Championship next year will be able to designate one of their 15 selections each day as a “best bet” that will earn the player twice the payoff if the selection is a winner, the organizers of the tournament announced on Friday.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Doug O'Neill, who trains Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner I'll Have Another, has been suspended a minimum of 45 days and fined $15,000 after one of his runners at Del Mar in 2010 tested in excess of the permitted level of total carbon dioxide. The penalty will not begin until July 1 at the earliest.

I'll Have Another is scheduled to start in the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park on June 9, in an attempt to sweep the Triple Crown.

The ancient stallion spends his days grazing in a spacious paddock at an historic Virginia farm. His back is swayed, his front teeth are missing, and white hairs spread across his dark face like a spiderweb.

Whenever a van rumbles up the old farm road, his long ears pop forward and he breaks into a gallop − in case, perchance, the van is bringing him a date. But those days have long passed.

California Horse Racing Board votes to restrict clenbuterol use

The California Horse Racing Board voted on Thursday to restrict the use of the bronchodilator clenbuterol in the state this summer, extending the suggested withdrawal time from four days to 21.

The new guideline will take effect with the start of the Del Mar meeting, on July 18.

Hermosillo named New Jersey Horse of the Year

OCEANPORT, N.J. – Hermosillo, a five-time winner last season, has been named New Jersey-bred Horse of the Year by the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association of New Jersey.

Owned by Kenwood Racing, Hermosillo also took home champion handicap horse honors.

Claimed for $20,000 in 2008, Hermosillo captured five races last year, including a three-race winning streak late in the Monmouth meet. It started with the Charles Hesse III Handicap and continued with a pair of allowance victories, including one over Breeders’ Cup Marathon winner Afleet Again.

Preakness television ratings decline

The national television rating for the race portion of the Preakness Stakes broadcast on NBC declined 7 percent compared with the same rating last year, according to the network.

The final rating for the race was a 5.2 with a 13 share, down from a 5.6 rating and 13 share last year. According to NBC, approximately 8.1 million viewers watched the race, compared with 8.8 million viewers last year.
