World Thoroughbred Rankings: How they assess the best

The World Thoroughbred Rankings, published throughout the year and culminating in a year-end summation, attempt to quantify the performance level of horses throughout the world. The rankings, which began in 2004, are a product of an international panel of experts put together by the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities, an organization with roots dating back to 1961.

Louisiana likely to impose longer ban on Quarter Horse trainer for dermorphin violation

Kentucky judge rules Veitch can apply for license

LEXINGTON, Ky. – A Franklin Circuit Court judge Wednesday ruled that the state’s former chief state steward should be allowed to apply for a license if he presents evidence to the state racing commission that a racetrack intends to hire him, according to an attorney representing the former steward, John Veitch.

Secretariat awarded Preakness record at 1:53 after review

The Maryland Racing Commission on Tuesday voted unanimously to change the official time of the 1973 Preakness Stakes won by Secretariat from 1:54 2/5 to 1:53, a time that will give the two-time Horse of the Year the record in all three of the Triple Crown races.

The commission approved the change after two hours of testimony at a meeting at Laurel Park, the sister track of Pimlico Race Course, where the Preakness is held. Penny Chenery, the late horse’s owner, requested the hearing on the basis of analyses conducted by companies she had hired to review the videotapes of the race.

Aqueduct casino tops nation in slots revenue

A casino at Aqueduct in New York City generated more monthly slot-machine revenue than any other casino in the United States for the first time in May, according to data distributed by the casino’s operator Monday.

Slot-machine revenue at the casino, Opened last October and called Resorts World, was $57.5 million in May, according to the data, exceeding the one-month revenue at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut by $2.1 million. It was the first month since the Aqueduct casino opened in late October in which the casino posted the highest one-month slot-machine total in the United States.

NTRA sells $600K in bonds
