Breeders' Cup Classic: Brilliant Speed to make final start of his career

Brilliant Speed, whose biggest win came in the 2011 Blue Grass Stakes, will make the final start of his career in the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita on Nov. 3, trainer Tom Albertrani said Tuesday.

New Jersey taking sports-betting applications

New Jersey began accepting applications for sports wagering licenses on Monday despite controversy over the legality of the practice.

The state’s Division of Gaming Enforcement announced that it would begin to accept the applications on Monday with the formal adoption of rules governing the practice. In a release, the division said that it will not approve any licenses before Jan. 9. Applicants will be required to pay $50,000 for a license.

Niigon, Queen's Plate winner and sire, dies at 11

Niigon, winner of the 2004 Queen’s Plate and one of Canada’s leading sires, has died at the age of 11.

“He suffered a broken femur in his stall and we were unable to save him,” said Rob Landry, general manager for Chiefswood Stable, which stood Niigon at Colebrook Farms.

Niigon also finished second in the Plate Trial prior to winning the Queen’s Plate and followed up with a second-place finish, beaten a head, in Fort Erie’s Prince of Wales and a third via disqualification in the Grade 2 Jim Dandy at Saratoga.

Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic: My Miss Aurelia surprises Asmussen with her quickness

My Miss Aurelia breezes five furlongs in 1:03.04 over the Oklahoma training track on Sunday.

My Miss Aurelia, the undefeated champion 2-year-old filly of 2011, worked five furlongs in 59.40 seconds, preparing for a start in the Breders' Cup Ladies’ Classic on Nov. 2.

Trainer Steve Asmussen timed My Miss Aurelia in 1:00.12.

“I guess they got her quicker than I did,” Asmussen said. “I thought she went well on this track.”

My Miss Aurelia won the Cotillion Stakes at Parx Racing on Sept. 22, her second start of 2012.

Breeders' Cup Sprint: Baffert unveils surprise candidate in Fast Bullet

Jockey Rafael Bejarano and trainer Bob Baffert combined to win three Grade 1 stakes on Saturday's card at Santa Anita, including the Awesome Again with Game On Dude.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert has a growing list of Breeders’ Cup candidates.

Sunday at Santa Anita, Baffert worked several notable prospects for the Breeders’ Cup races on Nov. 2-3, including Game On Dude, the likely favorite for the BC Classic, and the highly-promising 2-year-old Power Broker, a leading candidate for the BC Juvenile.

Baffert may have a surprise starter for the BC Sprint in Fast Bullet, a 4-year-old colt who has not raced since last November.

Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint: Turbulent Descent earns a bullet without urging

ELMONT, N.Y. - A “lively breeze” by the multiple Grade 1 winner Turbulent Descent highlighted a busy work tab Sunday morning at Belmont Park that included several horses potentially pointing to Breeders’ Cup races.

 Turbulent Descent, working in company with Ciao Bella, worked four furlongs in 47.12 seconds over the Belmont training track. It was the fastest of 67 breezes timed at the distance.

Breeders' Cup Classic: Flat Out's feet prevent him from workout

ELMONT, N.Y. - Flat Out, the two-time Jockey Club Gold Cup winner and one of the favorites for next month’s $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic, is dealing with foot issues again that prompted trainer Bill Mott to postpone a workout scheduled for Sunday morning.

At this point, Mott does not believe the issue will force Flat Out to miss the Classic, a race in which he finished fifth as the 7-2 favorite last year.

Paynter leaving New Bolton, headed to Fair Hill center in Maryland

On Friday, Paynter's owner, Ahmed Zayat, tweeted: "Paynter has beaten colitis, laminitis, and a nasty abscess and today we are proud of our special colt.”

Haskell winner Paynter will leave Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center on Sunday and head to Fair Hill Equine Therapy Center in Maryland and then to WinStar Farm in Kentucky, owner Ahmed Zayat said Friday evening.

The 3-year-old colt, who has been hospitalized since Aug. 26 battling colitis and early-stage signs of laminitis, probably will stay at Fair Hill Equine Therapy in Elkton, Md., for three to four weeks before shipping on to WinStar, where he likely will remain for at least two to three months, Zayat estimated.

Jackson Bend, multiple Grade 1 winner, retired at 5

Owner-breeder Fred Brei said Jackson Bend was unable to mentally recover from a training accident at Saratoga on Aug. 18.

The multiple Grade 1 winner Jackson Bend, who developed a reputation as a small horse with a big heart, has been retired from racing, trainer Nick Zito confirmed Thursday.

Fred Brei, the breeder and co-owner of Jackson Bend, said the horse did not appear to mentally recover from a training accident at Saratoga on Aug. 18 when a horse barreled into him on the Oklahoma training track, Zito said.

Brei said that Jackson Bend would join the stallion roster of Journeyman Stud in Ocala, Fla., where he will stand for a fee of $5,000.

Frankel spurs debate over all-time greatest racehorses

And there he was. Frankel. The Horse of Horses, perfection on the hoof, cantering along under his regular morning rider, Shane Fetherstonhaugh, at a middling pace behind his older half-brother, Bullet Train.
