A number of Thoroughbred entities, including Claiborne Farm and Lane’s End Farm, have been listed as creditors in the Chapter 7 bankruptcy filing of Halsey Minor, the founder of CNET who had once flirted with the idea of buying racetracks.

Thursday is the 100th anniversary of the day racing returned to New York after an absence of two years and nine months.On Friday, May 30, 1913, an estimated crowd of 35,000 at Belmont Park hailed the return of the sport and a strange form of oral betting that would remain in effect for more than 20 years.

Since closing day of the Saratoga meeting on Aug. 31, 1910, the doors of all New York tracks had been shuttered, except for the occasional non-betting steeplechase meeting put on by the United Hunts Association.

Little progress solving stabling issue in Southern California

Executives with Southern California’s racetracks and horsemen’s groups were unable to reach a resolution for off-track stabling in 2014 at a two-hour meeting at Santa Anita on Tuesday.

With Betfair Hollywood Park scheduled to close in December, more than 1,200 horses will be displaced from that barn area, creating an urgent need for alternative stabling at other venues in the region.

Tampa Bay Downs: Veterinarian accepts 90-day suspension

A veterinarian who was observed injecting a horse at Tampa Bay Downs on the day the horse was entered to race has accepted a 90-day suspension in exchange for cooperating in an ongoing investigation of the incident, according to an order issued by the Florida Division of Pari-Mutuel Wagering.

South American jockey Ricardo passes 12,000-win mark

Argentine jockey Jorge Ricardo became the first rider to surpass 12,000 wins on May 26 in Buenos Aires. Ricardo, 51, a native of Brazil, rides primarily in Argentina. He won the 10,000th race of his career in 2008 and reached the 11,000-win mark in 2010.

Ricardo has won more than 160 Group 1 races in South America. He won a record 477 races in a single-season in Brazil in 1993 and a record 467 races in one year in Argentina in 2008.

Russell Baze, the all-time winningest rider in North America, is nearing the 12,000-win milestone.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The changing landscape of West Coast racing will include an unusual twist to the calendar – Santa Anita will stay open into July and Del Mar into the month of December. It used to be the other way around.

The California Horse Racing Board on Thursday gave the industry its first look at a California circuit that will operate next year without Hollywood Park, which will cease racing this December.

CHRB meeting: Stall space chief issue in racing dates discussion

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The imminent closure of Hollywood Park has created widespread turmoil in the California racing industry, and that was reflected while the California Horse Racing Board tried to resolve 2014 racing dates at its monthly meeting held Thursday in Sacramento.

Santa Anita and Del Mar proposed taking most of the 2014 dates vacated by Hollywood, including an extended meet at Santa Anita through early July and a fall meet in November at Del Mar. Those new or revised race meets would be in addition to the annual Del Mar summer meet and Santa Anita fall meet.
