Daisy Devine has clenbuterol positive at Keeneland; DQ'd from second in Wiley

Daisy Devine's connections will forfeit the $60,000 she earned for finisng second in the Jenny Wiley following a clenbuterol positive.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The millionaire mare Daisy Devine has been disqualified from her runner-up finish in the Grade 1 Jenny Wiley Stakes at Keeneland in April after testing positive for clenbuterol, a Class 3 medication. Trainer Andrew McKeever has been suspended 15 days and fined $500 by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission for his role in his stable star being disqualified.

Daisy Devine, owned by James M. and Debbie Miller, was slated to earn $60,000 for finishing second behind Centre Court in the $300,000 Jenny Wiley on April 13. The purse will be redistributed accordingly.

Herb Goldstein, former Daily Racing Form columnist, dies

Herb Goldstein, a former columnist for Daily Racing Form who formed a racing partnership following his retirement from the paper, died on June 7 in an assisted-living facility in Boca Raton, Fla., according to family members. Goldstein, who was suffering from Parkinson’s disease and congestive heart failure, was 83.

Hearing officer's report in case of filly Sign delayed

LEXINGTON, Ky. – A hearing officer’s report examining whether the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission should have required the owners of a filly to forfeit the purse of a stakes race after the filly tested positive for a prohibited medication will not be released on or before Wednesday, as previously planned, according to officials in the case.

Mid-South notes: Oklahoma tracks request 2014 dates

Remington Park has requested a 67-date meet for Thoroughbreds in 2014, from Aug. 15 to Dec. 14. Date requests are to be considered at the August meeting of the Oklahoma Racing Commission, said executive director Tino Rieger. Remington has also asked for a 50-date meet for Quarter Horses, from March 7 to June 1.

Will Rogers Downs near Tulsa is seeking a 32-date meet for Thoroughbreds next year, from March  3 to May 17, and a 28-date Quarter Horse meet from Sept. 6 to Nov. 8. Fair Meadows is seeking a 34-date mixed meet, from June 7 to Aug. 1.

Tougher New Mexico drug penalties go into effect July 1

The New Mexico legislature has cleared the way for potential criminal charges to be filed against licensees found to have administered Class 1 or Class 2 drugs to horses either working or racing at the state’s tracks. The provision was among the updates made to the New Mexico Horse Racing Act, according to Vince Mares, agency director of the New Mexico Racing Commission. The changes go into effect on Monday,

The state legislature also passed a bill that provides funding for enhanced drug testing.

“We were very excited that those two bills passed,” said Mares.

Ontario Horse Racing Transition Panel releases latest plan

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – On Friday, the Ontario government’s Horse Racing Transition Panel released a draft of its latest plan for a sustainable horse racing industry in the province.

The panel, composed of former Ontario cabinet ministers Elmer Buchanan, John Snobelen, and John Wilkinson, had released a report to the province’s Liberal government last fall which led to most Ontario’s racetracks receiving transitional funding to help them cope with the loss of revenue from the slots at racetracks program, which ended March 31, 2013.

Jim Hudson, trainer and Super Bowl winner, dead at 70

Jim Hudson, a trainer for more than 30 years who was a member of the New York Jets team that won the Super Bowl in 1969, died at his home in Austin, Texas, on Tuesday, according to a family member. He had been suffering from Parkinson’s disease. Hudson was 70.

New York State Gaming Commission holds first meeting

The New York State Gaming Commission, which replaced the New York State Racing and Wagering Board as of Feb. 1, met for the first time Wednesday, adopting a series of motions concerning how the commission will conduct itself in the future.

The commission met six days after the state’s Senate confirmed the first four appointees to the commission. Three appointments to the seven-member commission remain to be named by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

U.S. alleges pension mismanagement by former Highland Farm owner

The U.S. Department of Labor has filed a lawsuit accusing George S. Hofmeister, the former owner of Highland Farm, and Nelson Clemmens, the chief executive of the account-wagering company Amwest, of violations of a federal securities act for allegedly diverting $5 million in pension funds to benefit companies owned or controlled by Hofmeister.

Fair Grounds tells of turf course measures

Fair Grounds on Tuesday began seeding its turf course with a tougher strain of Bermuda grass in an effort to rebuild the surface that had difficulty drying out during a particularly wet New Orleans meet that ended March 31.

The process is part of a restoration plan recommended by surface expert Mick Peterson, who has been assessing the local course, said Eric Halstrom, vice president and general manager of Fair Grounds.

Fair Grounds officials updated the Louisiana Racing Commission on the status of the course at its meeting Monday.
