Trainer Jack Bradley dies at age 83

John M. “Jack” Bradley, a longtime trainer on the New York Thoroughbred circuit and a former jockey, died Sunday in an assisted-living home in Loudon County, Tenn., of thyroid cancer, according to his daughter. Bradley was 83.

Bradley grew up near Belmont Park in New York, and he started his career in New York as a jockey when he was 15 years old, according to his daughter, Shan Koehler. Stewards discovered he had lied about his age when he was 16, and he was forced off the track, Koehler said.

California claiming rule may be revised

The California Horse Racing Board is expected to discuss a possible rule revision later this summer that will allow owners and trainers to take possession of claimed horses placed on the veterinarian’s list for unsoundness, according to a racing board spokesman.

Since May, claims have been voided in California on horses placed on a vet’s list for unsoundness.

Kentucky commission again revises drug ruling

The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission has reached a settlement to nullify the disqualification of a filly from second place in a stakes race at Keeneland last year after the filly tested positive for an illegal amount of the muscle relaxant methocarbamol.

The settlement is the second the commission approved this week as a result of an examination of state rules following a hearing into the disqualification of a horse from last year’s Pocahontas Stakes at Churchill Downs. The filly who won that race, Sign, also tested positive for an illegal amount of methocarbamol.

The board of the Racing Medication and Testing Consortium has endorsed a model rule that would assign points to trainers with medication violations, a scheme that could dramatically alter the penalties that are levied on horsemen who have multiple positives for illegal medications.

California Horse Racing Board wants deal on Southern California stabling by August meeting

DEL MAR, Calif. – A resolution on offtrack stabling in Southern California for 2014 and beyond may be reached in the next month after a lengthy discussion at Thursday’s California Horse Racing Board meeting focused on potential locations, the number of stalls needed, and concerns over funding.

A meeting between racing board chairman David Israel and officials with racetracks and horsemen’s organizations is scheduled for Monday, with a solution to the stabling issue possibly being reached before the racing board’s August 22 meeting at Del Mar.

Santa Anita fall meet gets conditional approval by CHRB

DEL MAR, Calif. – Santa Anita received conditional approval from the California Horse Racing Board on Thursday to conduct an autumn meeting later this year that will include two days of Breeders’ Cup races, dependent on the racetrack finalizing negotiations on issues pertaining to backstretch stabling and waste water disposal, marketing, and television distribution.

The racing board granted Santa Anita 24 days of racing from Sept. 27 through Nov. 3. The Breeders’ Cup will be held Nov. 1-2.
