Santa Anita pick six pays $7,264

ARCADIA, Calif. - On a day dominated by low-priced winners, and an upset in the stakes, the pick six paid $7,264 for 108 ticketholders at Santa Anita on Saturday.

The day began with a two-day carryover of $230,199. Bettors added $1,034,533 to the pool on Saturday.

The winners of the pick six races were Olympic Blue ($3.40), Newfound Gold ($7.60), Field Report ($3.40), Summer Exclusive ($4.80), A Toast to You ($39.80), and Water Issues ($5.80).

A Toast to You won the California Flag Handicap.

Tyler Baze should not be reinstated, CHRB investigator tells Santa Anita stewards

Tyler Baze missed more than a year of riding, from August 2011 to October 2012, because of problems with alcoholism.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Suspended jockey Tyler Baze, who has not ridden since failing a sobriety test at Betfair Hollywood Park in June, should not have his license reinstated until October 2014 at the earliest, a California Horse Racing Board investigator told Santa Anita stewards on Saturday.

The investigator cited several alcohol-related incidents in the past 18 months involving Baze as the reason for his recommendation, including an arrest for driving under the influence in Northern California in late July.

Breeders' Cup: Flintshire, Winsili skipping event

ARCADIA, Calif. – The European Group 1 winners Flintshire and Winsili will not start in Breeders’ Cup races Nov. 2, the racing manager of Juddmonte Farms said in an e-mail Saturday.

Teddy Grimthorpe did not indicate a reason, saying they would not be traveling to California. Flintshire was a candidate for the $3 million BC Turf, while Winsili was being considered for the $2 million BC Filly and Mare Turf.

Suffolk Downs: Caesars out as casino partner

Caesars Entertainment has backed out of a partnership with Suffolk Downs in East Boston on a massive casino project less than three weeks before voters will be asked whether to approve a casino at the track, Suffolk officials said in a statement on Saturday.

Caesars pulled out at the request of Suffolk after Massachusetts regulators provided a report to track officials that raised questions about the company’s suitability for a license, the statement said. Caesars entered a partnership with Suffolk to build a casino and hotel at the track in 2011.

Panza will join New York Racing Association as racing vice president

Martin Panza, a racing executive at Betfair Hollywood Park for two decades, has been hired as the senior vice president of racing operations for the New York Racing Association, a source with knowledge of the hire confirmed Friday.

Neither NYRA nor Panza would comment on the hire. It was uncertain when an official announcement would be made or when Panza would start his new job.

It is expected that Panza, 50, will hold the No. 2 managerial position under NYRA president and CEO Christopher Kay, who was hired in July.

Ralph Scurfield, former chairman of California Horse Racing Board, dies at 85

Ralph Scurfield, a former chairman of the California Horse Racing Board, died on Tuesday, the racing board announced on Friday.

Scurfield was 85 and was hospitalized in Sacramento at the time of his death.

A chairman of the Association of Racing Commissioners International in 1998, Scurfield served on the California Horse Racing Board from January 1991 to September 1999. For seven of those years, he was chairman, the second-longest period that a person has held that position, the racing board said in a statement.

Massachusetts Gaming Commission adopts uniform medication guidelines

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission on Thursday formally adopted a set of rules and penalty guidelines that are being pushed in a number of U.S. racing states as a way to align the sport’s regulations among its racing jurisdictions.

The commission voted 5-0 to adopt the rules, the commission said. Under the rules, trainers and veterinarians will be allowed to administer 24 therapeutic medications that will be regulated by threshold levels in post-race testing. All other drugs will be considered prohibited.

Oklahoma bans James E. Jones for 10 years after dermorphin positives

The Oklahoma Racing Commission on Thursday issued three 10-year suspensions to trainer James E. Jones and fined him a cumulative $30,000 for three dermorphin positives in the state’s second case for the Class 1 drug. The positives stemmed from the 2012 Will Rogers Downs meet for Thoroughbreds.
