Keeneland fall meet sets records for attendance, handle

Keeneland Racecourse posted record averages for both attendance and wagering handle during its 17-day fall meet, the track said on Saturday, the fourth straight meet at which attendance records rose.

Average attendance rose 3 percent to 15,674, Keeneland said, despite up-and-down weather throughout the meet, which ended on Saturday. The meet started on an unseasonably hot day, was followed by heavy rains for two weekend days, and then the track enjoyed nearly ideal weather for a week. The last week of the meet started out cold and wintry, but closing day was seasonable.

Belmont Park: Pick six hit for $523,036

ELMONT, N.Y. – There was one winning ticket sold for Saturday’s pick six at Belmont Park, returning $523,036. The winning ticket was purchased through the Elite Turf Club, an advance-deposit-wagering platform through the Las Vegas hub, according to New York Racing Association officials.

There was a two-day carryover of $173,468 entering Saturday’s card, and an additional $629,175 was wagered into the pool Saturday.

Santa Anita: Suspended jockey Baze denied reinstatement

ARCADIA, Calif. – Jockey Tyler Baze, who has been suspended since June for failing a sobriety test at Betfair Hollywood Park, has been denied reinstatement by the Santa Anita stewards for failure to comply with the terms of his summertime suspension, according to a ruling issued Saturday.

Breeders' Cup to offer $1 million prize in free contest

The Breeders’ Cup has launched a promotion that will allow people to try to select the complete order of finish in the Nov. 2 Breeders’ Cup Classic for a prize of up to $1 million.

The contest requires participants to register online and make their selection for the final order of finish by post time of the Classic, scheduled for 8:35 p.m. Eastern. If a contest participant picks the complete correct order, he will receive $1 million, paid as an annuity of $25,000 each year for 40 years, according to the rules of the contest.

Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint: Dance to Bristol works

Dance to Bristol brings a five-race winning streak into Monday's Honorable Miss.

Dance to Bristol, the pride of the Bowie training center in Maryland, had her final workout toward the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint when speeding five furlongs Friday in 58.60 seconds.

With trainer Ollie Figgins III watching, Xavier Perez, who has ridden Dance to Bristol in her last eight races – winning all but the most recent one – was aboard for the drill. The 4-year-old Speightstown filly was scheduled to be flown Saturday to California.

Weren’t we just here? Didn’t we just run over to Keeneland for a few days before finding ourselves right back here at Churchill Downs?

Indeed, some Kentucky racing fans and participants might be asking themselves those very questions as the 25-day fall meet gets started at Churchill. ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Trainer Roger Attfield has run numerous horses in the Canadian International, without a victory. The drought could end Sunday, when he sends out favored Forte Dei Marmi and upstart Perfect Timber in the 76th running of the $1 million fixture.

The International encompasses exactly one lap around Woodbine’s roomy 12-furlong course. It heads a superb 11-race card that also features another Grade 1 turf stakes, the $500,000 E.P. Taylor, a 10-furlong test for fillies and mares.

Kentucky Court of Appeals orders circuit court review of Veitch suspension

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky Court of Appeals has ruled that the state’s circuit court should review the one-year suspension levied by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission on former chief state steward John Veitch because the sanction was based in part on a flawed interpretation of his role in the Life At Ten incident at the 2010 Breeders’ Cup.
