Aqueduct cancels Sunday card due to high winds

Sunday’s nine-race card at Aqueduct was canceled due to high winds, according to track officials. Both Aqueduct and Belmont Park were to remain open for simulcasting.

According to Glen Kozak, NYRA’s vice president/facilities and racing surfaces, the National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for sustained winds from 20 to 30 miles per hour, with gusts ranging from 45 to 55 mph, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Kozak said the cancellation did not have to do with temperatures that were in the low 20s Sunday morning.

Hollywood Park: Pick six carryover of $226,598

ARCADIA, Calif. - The pick six pool on Sunday is expected to exceed $1 million at Betfair Hollywood Park, a program that begins with a two-day carryover of $226,598.

An upset win by Royally Dunn ($136) in Saturday’s fourth eliminated most tickets in the first leg of the pick six. Going into the ninth race, five horses were not covered in the pick six. The carryover was clinched when Only the Gold ($85.20) caught 2-1 favorite Afflication in the final strides. If Afflication had won, the pick six would have been hit.

Penn National: Ben's Cat seeks Fabulous Strike repeat in main-track return

Tom Keyser
Ben's Cat, who has not raced on dirt since winning last year's Fabulous Strike Handicap, will try for a repeat in that $250,000 race Wednesday.

Penn National racing officials probably had their fingers crossed, hoping their quartet of Thanksgiving Eve stakes, topped by the $250,000 Fabulous Strike Handicap for sprinters, would lure at least one horse who competed in the Breeders’ Cup earlier this month.

The list of nominees to the Fabulous Strike included three runners exiting the BC Sprint – winner Secret Circle, third-place Gentlemen’s Bet, and also-ran Private Zone, the winner of the Grade 1 Vosburgh – along with Tightend Touchdown, who outran his 18-1 odds to get second in the BC Turf Sprint.

Benoit & Associates
Cyclometer comes into the On Trust Handicap after earning a 101 Beyer Speed Figure on Nov. 7.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Cyclotron could have been another in a long line of outstanding sprinters trained by Bruce Headley, but his career lasted only four starts.

“Every time he worked, he worked in black letters,” Headley said. “But he cracked his foot in half. He had a deformed foot. He still came back and won in [1:08.80]. I said I’m going to breed him.”

Baffert exonerated by California Horse Racing Board in equine deaths

Barbara D. Livingston
Bob Baffert went into the week with a double-digit lead in victories over the second-place trainer, John Sadler.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert did not violate any California Horse Racing Board rules when seven of his horses based at Betfair Hollywood Park died suddenly during a 16-month period ending in March, the racing board was told on Thursday.

Equine medical director Dr. Rick Arthur told the racing board that necropsy reports conducted on the horses revealed no presence of illegal medications, but said that the high incidents of such deaths in one stable was exceptional.
