Kentucky Horse Racing Commission approves uniform drug rules

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The ideal of medication uniformity in Thoroughbred racing in America drew a big step closer to reality Wednesday when the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission approved changes to the state’s medication rules, aligning Kentucky with 10 other states to take similar action this year.

The approval by an 11-0 vote (with one abstention) came at a regularly scheduled commission meeting at the Kentucky Horse Park. That result was widely expected after an advisory panel to the commission, the Equine Drug Research Council, formally recommended the changes Dec. 3.

Spooky Mulder enjoying retirement on the farm

Friday’s feature at Aqueduct is named the Spooky Mulder, honoring a fan favorite known for his speed, tenacity, and consistency. Spooky Mulder retired in 2009 at age 11 after a career in which he won 34 of 85 starts, with 17 second-place finishes and 4 thirds. Racing for nine different trainers – some of whom claimed him more than one time – Spooky Mulder earned $950,548, winning just one minor stakes at Delaware Park.

Suffolk Downs: New host community vote required on casino project

Although the Massachusetts Gaming Commission ruled Tuesday that the revised casino license proposal by Suffolk Downs and new gaming partner Mohegan Sun may remain in the hunt for the sole casino license designated for the Boston area, a new vote was ordered to be held by the host community.

During a hearing Tuesday, commissioner James McHugh said that a new vote by residents of Revere was necessary because the track has a new development partner and its plans now called for the entire $1 billion resort casino to be located in Revere.

Los Alamitos gets city approval for track expansion

Crews begin work Tuesday to expand the Los Alamitos track.

CYPRESS, Calif. – Los Alamitos Race Course received approval from the Cypress City Council on Monday evening to expand its racetrack to a mile in circumference to accommodate Thoroughbred racing in 2014, a construction project track officials said was to begin Tuesday.

The council voted 5-0 to approve the expansion after hearing 50 minutes of testimony in favor of the project. There were no speakers in opposition of the plan.

Charles Town, Parx, Beulah cancel due to weather

Charles Town canceled Tuesday night’s nine-race card due to snow but said it plans to resume racing Wednesday night.

Charles Town said it would remain open for simulcasting Tuesday. The West Virginia track had received almost two inches of snow by late Tuesday morning, and another one to three inches was expected during the afternoon, according to The Weather Channel.

First post for Wednesday’s nine-race card is 7:15 p.m.

** Parx canceled for the second straight day on Tuesday due to the affects of the storm. Parx is scheduled to resume racing on Saturday.

Charles Town: Oaks gets $100,000 purse increase; Researcher slashed by $300,000

A purse increase of $100,000 for the Charles Town Oaks, the second graded event in Charles Town history, and a $300,000 purse decrease for the Researcher Stakes are among the biggest changes to Charles Town’s stakes schedule for 2014. The West Virginia track released its stakes schedule Monday, with 25 races worth a total of $3.55 million.

Comma to the Top has a sore foot and will need 45 to 60 days off.

Comma to the Top, a millionaire who won nine stakes from 2010-13, has been retired and will be retrained as a stable pony for Peter Miller, the trainer told Betfair Hollywood Park publicity Sunday.

Comma to the Top won 14 of 33 starts and earned $1,349,406 while racing for Hollywood film executives Gary Barber, Roger Birnbaum, and Kevin Tsujihara.

Woodbine to race 133 days in 2014

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Woodbine has announced a 133-day Thoroughbred meet for next year, the same number of days as the current meet, which concludes Dec. 15.

Pending Ontario Racing Commission approval, the meet will go from April 12 to Dec. 7. Racing is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. Eastern from Friday through Sunday, along with holiday Mondays and Tuesday, July 1. Wednesday night racing, with a 6:45 first post, begins May 28 and will be conducted throughout the meet, except for after a long weekend.

Tyler Baze talks to stewards, awaits ruling on regaining jockey's license

Tyler Baze missed more than a year of riding, from August 2011 to October 2012, because of problems with alcoholism.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Jockey Tyler Baze, who has not ridden since June because of an alcohol-related suspension, moved closer to reinstatement after discussing the terms of his current rehabilitation with track stewards on Saturday.

Steward Scott Chaney presided over the meeting and indicated that despite a recent relapse of alcoholism by the jockey that he would vote to grant Baze a license to resume riding in the near future. Chaney said that he and fellow stewards Kim Sawyer and Tom Ward would issue a ruling on Baze’s case “in coming days.”

Multimillionaire Flat Out retired at 7

Flat Out storms home to leave pacesetting Private Zone in his wake in the Cigar Mile.

Flat Out, one of only two horses to win both the Jockey Club Gold Cup and the Suburban Handicap multiple times, has been retired from racing, owner Art Preston confirmed Saturday. Preston said he hoped to announce stallion plans in the coming week.

Flat Out, a 7-year-old son of Flatter, capped a terrific career by winning the Grade 1 Cigar Mile on Nov. 30 at Aqueduct. That was his ninth win from 29 career starts and his third in a Grade 1. He earned $3,645,383.
