Prominent blacksmith Jim Bayes dies at age 80

Jim Bayes, a prominent blacksmith who shod Alysheba and Cigar, died Thursday in Hot Springs, Ark., due to complications from the flu, said his wife, Jill. Bayes was 80.

Bayes was a native of Blanchard, Mich., who became one of the most sought after blacksmiths in racing. At one point in his career, Jill Bayes said her husband spent a number of years with Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s operation, splitting his time between Dubai and England. Bayes also spent time in New York and Kentucky.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Herbie D was named Horse of the Year in British Columbia at the 2013 Thoroughbred awards dinner held by the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society’s British Columbia division at the Newlands Golf & Country Club.

Owners George Robbins and Darcia Doman made multiple trips to the podium to pick up awards for Herbie D, who also was named British Columbia-bred Horse of the Year, champion older male in both the open and British Columbia-bred divisions, and champion sprinter.

Woodbine: Jockey Singh suspended 10 years

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Jockey/exercise rider Sunny Singh has been suspended 10 years by the Ontario Racing Commission for possessing an electrical device.

Singh was alleged to have had the device in his jacket pocket in the jockeys’ room at Woodbine on Nov. 8, when he was scheduled to ride one horse that he was taken off of late on the card.

As of Friday, Singh had yet to appeal the ban, which denies him access privileges to all Ontario racetracks during the period of the suspension, which began Dec. 11.

Castellano breaks Dominguez's earnings record

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Javier Castellano established a North American single season earnings record by a jockey after winning Friday’s third race at Gulfstream Park aboard I Ain’t Gonna Lie. Castellano, 36, eclipsed the old mark of $25,634,852 established by Ramon Dominguez in 2012.

“I’m very proud and thankful to break the record and be on the same level with such a classy guy as Ramon Dominguez,” said Castellano shortly after his record-breaking ride. “You work all year long for a moment like this.”

Penn National will package six stakes into two event nights for 2014
