Lone Star Handicap purse reduced to $200K

A reduction to the purse of the Grade 3 Lone Star Park Handicap and the renaming of an early season stakes for a late city official are the most notable changes to an 11-race, $1 million stakes schedule announced by Lone Star Park. The track also will incorporate night racing on Saturdays into its 50-date meet that opens April 10 and runs through July 12.

Mucho Macho Man’s BC Classic win selected as 2013 NTRA Moment of the Year

Mucho Macho Man's thrilling Breeders' Cup Classic win was voted by fans as the 2013 NTRA Moment of the Year.

The win by Mucho Macho Man in the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Classic has been selected in an online poll as the NTRA Moment of the Year, the organizers of the poll announced Friday.

It was relatively easy to understand why Mucho Macho Man’s Classic was handily voted the winner. He won the $5 million race by a nose in a thrilling stretch run. He was ridden by Gary Stevens, the Hall of Fame jockey who came out of retirement earlier in the year at age 50. He is trained by Kathy Ritvo, a heart-transplant survivor who became the first female trainer to win the Classic.

Los Alamitos: Court denies De La Torre's request for stay of ban

Quarter Horse trainer Jose De La Torre was denied a temporary restraining order in Orange County, Calif., on Jan. 10, seeking to have his stable reinstated on the backstretch at Los Alamitos after a series of clenbuterol positives.

The decision was announced in a press release issued by Los Alamitos on Thursday.

De La Torre had four horses test positive for the bronchodilator clenbuterol from late September to late November, resulting in the redistribution of $33,150 in purses. The trainer faces a possible fine or suspension for the positives.

Penn National tests horse showing equine herpesvirus symptoms

A barn at Penn National with approximately 45 stalls was placed under quarantine Friday morning after a horse in the barn began displaying neurological symptoms of the highly contagious disease equine herpesvirus, track officials said.

The horse, Taste of Punch, trained by Ron Rozell, had blood samples drawn on Friday morning for tests. The tests are expected to reveal whether the horse is positive for the disease by Saturday morning, Chris McErlean, the vice president of racing for Penn National’s parent company said.

Pat Pope named Prairie Meadows racing secretary

ALTOONA, Iowa - Pat Pope, the current racing secretary at Oaklawn Park, will return to Prairie Meadows as racing secretary for the 2014 Thoroughbred meet, according to Prairie Meadows officials.

Pope, who has served in a similar capacity at Delaware Park since 2009, last worked at Prairie Meadows in 2008 as an associate steward. He had previously served as the Prairie Meadows racing secretary from 1997 to 2002.

Black Caviar, Treve top-ranked World Thoroughbred Rankings for 2013

Black Caviar and Treve were the highest-rated horses in the world during 2013, according to the year-end publication of the World Thoroughbred Rankings by the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities.

The rankings, published several times annually, rate performances in individual races. Black Caviar, the Australian sprint sensation who was retired unbeaten in 25 starts, achieved a top rating of 130 on two occasions, while Treve, the brilliant French 3-year-old filly, earned the number through her romping victory in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

Aqueduct: Dan Eidson named racing secretary

Dan Eidson has been hired as the racing secretary for Aqueduct, one of two racing secretaries the New York Racing Association will employ in 2014, according to Martin Panza, senior vice president of racing operations for the organization.

Panza said the announcement of a racing secretary for the Belmont Park and Saratoga meets is still about two weeks away.

Gulfstream Park: Toasting has waited for Sunshine Millions Distaff

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – After Toasting finished second in the Grade 3 Comely at Aqueduct on Nov. 30, consideration was given to sending her to California for the Grade 1 La Brea at Santa Anita on Dec. 26. But once she was sent to Florida for the winter, the decision was made to just leave her alone, and bypass the cross-country trip, to point to the $300,000 Florida Sunshine Millions Distaff on Saturday at Gulfstream Park.
