Veteran steeplechase and flat trainer Thomas H. Voss died at his home in Monkton, Md., on Jan. 21. He was 63.

Laurel Park, Penn National, Charles Town cancel Wednesday programs

In the aftermath of Tuesday’s snowstorm in the Mid-Atlantic region, as temperatures plunged near zero with the wind chill factor, Laurel Park, Penn National, and Charles Town canceled their Wednesday live racing programs.

“It is better to wait and clear the track after it stopped snowing,” said Georganne Hale, director of racing for the Maryland Jockey Club “It is brutally cold out there, which could have been an issue with the jocks. It is not bearable out there today for horse or rider but we should be good to go tomorrow when the temperatures rise a bit.”

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Grade 1 winners Up With the Birds, Forte Dei Marmi, Phil’s Dream, and Ria Antonia headline the list of 2013 Sovereign Award finalists unveiled by the Jockey Club of Canada on Tuesday.

The top four finalists were announced in 16 different divisions as selected by 41 voters across Canada and the United States. Finalists for Canadian Horse of the Year will be revealed at the Sovereign Awards ceremony, which will take place at Woodbine on Friday, April 11, one day before the 2014 meet is slated to open.

Santa Anita: Pick six carryover of $419,541 for Thursday

ARCADIA, Calif. – There is a two-day pick six carryover of $419,541 on Thursday at Santa Anita.

The absence of a winning favorite in the first five races of Monday’s pick six, and wins by longshots such as Texas Ryano ($51.80) and Wonderful Lie ($36.40), clinched the carryover. With two days without racing before Thursday, the pool of new money may exceed $2 million.

Thursday’s pick six covers the third through eighth races on an eight-race program that begins at 1 p.m. Pacific.

Aqueduct: Trainer Schettino fined, suspended

Trainer Dominick Schettino was suspended from Feb. 4-8.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Trainer Dominick Schettino was suspended 10 days and fined $2,000 by the stewards for refusing to run his horse Ghostly Vision in a race here Jan. 10, necessitating a scratch.

The suspension was reduced to five days, Feb. 4-8, for Schettino waiving his right of appeal.

Ghostly Vision was the 7-5 morning-line favorite for a $20,000 claiming race here. According to state steward Stephen Lewandowski, Schettino didn’t have a legitimate reason to scratch but would not permit the horse to be treated with Lasix, medication on which he was listed to run.

Santa Anita: Pick six carryover of $94,233 for Monday

ARCADIA, Calif. – An upset win by Spellbound ($35) in Sunday’s Grade 2 La Canada Stakes has led to a pick six carryover of $94,233 for Monday’s nine-race program.

Monday’s program begins at 12:30 p.m. Pacific, with the pick six covering the fourth through ninth races. The pick six races do not include the day’s stakes race, the $75,000 San Pedro Stakes for 3-year-old sprinters. The San Pedro Stakes is the second race.

The pick six races have solid fields of nine, nine, and a maximum of 12-horse fields in the final four races.

Pletcher shows humor, emotion while accepting Eclipse Award

But at the 43rd annual Eclipse Awards dinner Saturday night at Gulfstream Park, during which Pletcher received his record sixth title as champion trainer, he showed both his sense of humor and the emotional toll taken on him by the recent loss of one of his favorite horses.
