Oaklawn Park, Turfway Park cancel Sunday cards due to winter weather

For the fourth straight day, winter weather has forced the cancellation of live racing at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark., on Sunday. The track also lost six of its races to wet weather last Sunday.                                         

Oaklawn expects to resume racing Thursday, with a five-day week that includes the Grade 3, $300,000 Southwest Stakes for 3-year-olds next Monday, Feb 17. Arkansas is under a winter storm warning through early Tuesday.

Aqueduct: Longshots produce pick six carryover of $83,355

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Longshot winners Two More Jacs ($43) and Hackleton ($46.60) helped produce a pick six  carryover of $83,355 into Sunday’s card at Aqueduct.

Coming up with five of six was a chore Saturday, but those who did received a consolation payout of $18,886.

Turfway Park: Hammond becomes first female trainer to win 2,000 races

Kim Hammond has been training for almost 35 years.

Kim Hammond became the first female trainer in North America to win 2,000 Thoroughbred races when Big Smooth took the fourth race at Turfway Park Saturday.

Hammond, 56, nearing her 35th year as a trainer, is the winningest female trainer in the sport, ahead of such notable trainers as Christine Janks, Kathleen O’Connell, Stephanie Beattie, and Linda Rice.

Triple Crown nominee list numbers 414 after late addition


Even Echo, a Kentucky-bred 3-year-old owned and trained by Myung Kwon Cho, has been added to the list of horses nominated to the Triple Crown after the nomination sent in by Cho was received via “late mail,” Churchill Downs said on Friday.

Even Echo’s nomination brings the total number of horses nominated to the 2014 Triple Crown to 414, a record. The nomination makes a horse eligible to start in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes.

Belmont Stakes Day card will have 10 stakes, $8 million in purses

The nine supporting stakes on the June 7 Belmont Stakes card will include the Metropolitan Handicap, now worth $1.25 million.

Racing fans won’t have to wait until November to experience a Breeders’ Cup-type program.

The New York Racing Association announced Friday that the June 7 Belmont Stakes Day card will offer purses totaling $8 million and 10 stakes races – six Grade 1’s – including the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap, which has been moved from its traditional Memorial Day spot on the calendar. Also, the purse of the Met Mile has been raised to $1.25 million from $750,000.
