The $300,000 Evangeline Downs Turf Sprint, which was announced last week, is the centerpiece of a 22-race, $2.1 million stakes schedule released by the Opelousas, La., track on Wednesday. The five-furlong turf race for 3-year-olds and up will be run June 21 on an afternoon card of five stakes worth a collective $640,000.

Suffolk Downs casino referendum passes

BOSTON, Mass. - Voters in Revere, Mass. turned out in force Feb. 25 to approve Mohegan Sun’s proposal to develop a $1.3 billion casino at Suffolk Downs, keeping hope alive that racing will continue at New England’s sole surviving Thoroughbred track for years to come.

Although official results had yet to be tabulated, the referendum in support of Suffolk Downs, which straddles the cities of Revere and East Boston, is estimated to have passed 63 percent to 37 percent. By state law, a casino can only be situated where voters decide to be the host community.

Streaming out for two months with bone chip

Streaming won the Grade 1 Hollywood Starlet Stakes last Saturday to remain unbeaten in two starts.

Streaming, the winner of the Grade 1 Hollywood Starlet Stakes last December, has been found to have a bone chip in a knee following a last-place finish in the $200,000 Rachel Alexandra Stakes at Fair Grounds on Saturday.

Trainer Bob Baffert said that the bone chip was diagnosed on Monday, and that Streaming is expected to be out of training for two months. The injury will prevent her from starting in the $1 million Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs on May 2.

Kentucky Derby Future Wager: Field still favored at 6-1

Cairo Prince, the winner of the Grade 2 Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream Park last month, is at 8-1 in Pool 3 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Seven new names are in the 23-horse lineup for Pool 3 of the 2014 Kentucky Derby Future Wager, which opens Thursday at noon Eastern for a three-day run.

Churchill Downs linemaker Mike Battaglia has listed the mutuel field, the 24th or “all others” option, as a lukewarm 6-1 morning-line favorite for Pool 3, followed by Cairo Prince (8-1), Top Billing (8-1), Honor Code (10-1), and Shared Belief (12-1).

The new horses in the pool are Albano, Bayern, Constitution, General a Rod, Kobe’s Back, Tamarando, and Wildcat Red.

Santa Anita Handicap added to Jockey Club Tour on Fox

The Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap on March 8 will be broadcast live on Fox Sports 1 as part of the new Jockey Club Tour on Fox television series, the Jockey Club and Fox announced on Monday.

The Jockey Club had been seeking to add the Big Cap to the series for several weeks because of a field that is expected to include the first two finishers in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic, Mucho Macho Man and Will Take Charge, and the top handicap horse Game On Dude. The telecast will air from 7 to 7:30 p.m. Eastern on Fox Sports 1, an all-sports channel that Fox launched last summer.

Clarence Scharbauer Jr., family owned Kentucky Derby winner Alysheba, dies at 88

Clarence Scharbauer Jr., whose family raced 1987 Kentucky Derby winner and 1988 Horse of the Year Alysheba, died Friday night in a Midland, Texas, hospital, confirmed Ken Carson, longtime manager of Scharbauer’s Valor Farm in Pilot Point, Texas. He was 88.

Scharbauer died from complications from emergency stomach surgery.

Scharbauer, a philanthropist and oilman, won last Saturday night’s Texas Stallion Stakes at Sam Houston with his homebred Fiftyshadesofgold. She is being pointed for the Fair Grounds Oaks.
