Old Rosebud won the United States Hotel Stakes at Saratoga as a juvenile in 1913 before winning the Derby in 1914.

On May 17, 1922, an 11-year-old gelding lined up against low-level claimers at New York’s Jamaica racecourse to compete for a thimble-sized purse. Perhaps he behaved badly; his manners, once kindly, had soured by this, his 80th career start. Did he even want to be there? Who knew?

Racing industry mulls logistics of ontrack pharmacies

Frank Stronach, who owns Santa Anita, Gulfstream, Golden Gate Fields, Laurel, and Pimlico, among other racing assets, released a statement on Wednesday listing 10 policies his tracks will seek to implement as house rules under the broad heading of “medication reform.”

LEXINGTON, Ky. – On the list of policies released Wednesday that Frank Stronach says he will implement at his tracks, the most intriguing – and most controversial – is the notion of creating ontrack pharmacies that will be responsible for buying and dispensing every dose of medication administered to every horse on racetrack grounds.

Los Alamitos looking to acquire Fairplex September dates

Officials with Barretts Sales and Racing at the Los Angeles County Fair are in advanced discussions with colleagues at Los Alamitos Racecourse to relocate the 13-day Fairplex meeting to the Orange County track this September, according to a Fairplex Park official.

If the racing dates are transferred, it is likely to mark the end of live racing at the Los Angeles County Fair, located at Fairplex Park in Pomona. Racing has been held at the Los Angeles County Fair since September 1933, shortly after the legalization of parimutuel racing in California.

Stronach makes medication reforms the No. 1 priority at his tracks

The tracks owned by the Stronach Group, a roster that includes Gulfstream Park, Santa Anita, Golden Gate, Laurel, and Pimlico, will seek to put in place house rules that would require owners to release their vet records to track officials and that would establish ontrack pharmacies controlling all medications administered to horses, the owner of the company, Frank Stronach, said in a statement Wednesday.

Gutterman signs on as NYRA marketing consultant

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Allen Gutterman, who served as vice president of marketing for the New York Racing Association in the early 1990s, has returned to the company as a marketing consultant, NYRA officials confirmed Wednesday.

Gutterman, who has also worked as a marketing official at The Meadowlands, Hollywood Park, and Santa Anita, will be here for the next three months, through the Belmont spring/summer meet that runs from May 1 through July 13.

Penn National adds five Wednesday cards in May, June

In an attempt to make up for numerous programs that were wiped out by a severe winter in central Pennsylvania, Penn National Race Course has added five Wednesday race cards during May and June.

The Pennsylvania Racing Commission granted approval for Penn National to add live racing on all four Wednesdays in May, beginning May 7, and June 4. The five additional days were requested by the Pennsylvania Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association, which represents the horsemen racing at Penn National.

Finger Lakes opens 162-day meet Friday; 15 stakes on calendar

There are 15 stakes worth a collective $1.1 million scheduled at Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack this season, the same as a year ago. The packaging, however, is a little different.

The western New York State racetrack will launch its 2014 season Friday with the first of 162 programs that run through Dec. 5. On opening day, the first post time is 12:35 p.m. Eastern. Racing begins at 1:10 p.m. on all other days except Fridays.

Daily Racing Form announced Tuesday that Peter Thomas Fornatale has joined the company in the newly created role of tournament editor.

In this capacity, Fornatale will expand his popular tournament blog on DRF.com, preview weekend tournaments, and create new content to engage and educate horseplayers about handicapping tournaments by showcasing strategies and tips, as well as profiling winning tournament players.
