Two white Thoroughbreds to compete at Belterra

A white Thoroughbred is an unusual sight to see on the track, but Friday’s seventh race at Belterra Park will feature two of the uniquely colored horses competing against one another.

Chief White Fox and Wear the Mask will be part of an eight-horse field at the newly reopened racetrack east of Cincinnati running in a six-furlong allowance race for non-winners of two.

Thoroughbred adoption group hosts online auction for Moneigh paintings

Animal Kingdom is among nine Triple Crown winners whose Moneigh paintings will be auctioned on eBay by the Thoroughbred adoption group ReRun.

ReRun, an adoption organization for Thoroughbred racehorses, announced Wednesday it will host an online auction for its Moneigh paintings. The artworks are created by the horses, using their muzzles, whiskers, tails, or hooves or by holding a paintbrush between their teeth.

The auction, which will take place June 2-9, will feature paintings by nine Triple Crown race winners – Animal Kingdom, Funny Cide, Giacomo, Mine That Bird, Orb, Shackleford, Street Sense, Super Saver, and Union Rags.

Intense Holiday retired, stud plans pending

Starlight Racing retired Grade 2 Intense Holiday Tuesday after the colt was injured while training for the Belmont Stakes.

Grade 2 winner Intense Holiday, injured over the weekend while preparing for a start in the Belmont Stakes, has been retired from racing, owner Starlight Racing announced in a release Tuesday. Stud plans have not been finalized.

Intense Holiday was vanned off the track after breezing the morning of May 25 at Belmont Park, and was diagnosed with a condylar fracture to his right front leg. He underwent surgery, performed by equine surgeon Dr. Patti Hogan, the following day. The fracture was mended, but retirement was advised.

Famed steeplechase rider Aitcheson dies at 85

Joe Aitcheson Jr., the steeplechase rider who was inducted in 1978 into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, died Friday at a hospice facility in Westminster, Md., following a long illness, according to an obituary from his family. Aitcheson was 85.

Two-day pick six carryover at $407K

ARCADIA, Calif. - There is a two-day pick six carryover of $407,077 on Friday at Santa Anita, the first two-day carryover in more than two months at this track.

The carryover was announced on Friday after the eighth of nine races, the fifth leg of the pick six. There were no winning favorites among the first five winners of the pick six.

There is no live racing at Santa Anita from Tuesday through Thursday. With a three-day gap between live racing days, the pool of new money in the pick six should exceed $1.5 million, and possibly approach $2 million.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Beholder, prepping for a star-studded showdown with Princess of Sylmar and Close Hatches in the Grade 1, $1 million Ogden Phipps Stakes at Belmont Park on June 7, worked a sharp mile Monday at Santa Anita and looked so good that trainer Richard Mandella did a giddy jig afterward.

“I think she’s ready,” he said, breaking into a wide smile.

Pick six carryover of $94,643 for Monday's card

ARCADIA, Calif. - There is a jackpot carryover for Monday, though it’s not the one that bettors coveted a chance to conquer.

While the Rainbow 6 was hit at Gulfstream Park on Sunday, there will be a pick six carryover of $94,643 for Monday’s nine-race program at Santa Anita.

Monday’s program begins at 1:30 p.m. Pacific, with the fourth race, the first race of the pick six, due to start at 3 p.m.

Jacino sustains broken arm in race declared no contest

Jockey John Jacinto broke his arm in the sixth race Sunday at Louisiana Downs, according to his agent, Richard Price. The race was declared a no contest, according to Trent McIntosh, director of operations for the Bossier City, La., track. Jacinto was thrown, and had to be removed from the track by officials.

Price said an X-ray taken at a local hospital revealed the break. He said Jacinto remained at the hospital as of the early evening hours on Sunday.

Horse owner Borislow wins Rainbow Six jackpot to tune of nearly $7 million

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Gulfstream Park’s Rainbow Six jackpot, which had not been solved since Jan. 10 and had gained national notoriety with a mandatory payout scheduled for Monday, was hit Sunday for a record $6,678,939 by horse owner Dan Borislow, who purchased the winning ticket at the Palm Beach Kennel Club.  The payoff eclipsed the previous high of $3,591,245 collected by an unidentified player in New Jersey in February 2013.
