Wrong-way horse causes no contest at Hastings

The fifth race at Hastings on Sunday was declared a no contest after Hes No Clark Gable dropped jockey Freddy Manrigue just after leaving the starting gate in the two-turn sprint for bottom-level maidens,  and ran the wrong way around the track. Although he was running on the outside of the track, some jockeys in the race understandably pulled up their horses when Hes No Clark Gable came into contact with the field approaching the three-eighths pole.

All wagers directly on the race were refunded and every horse was declared a winner in any multiple-race wagers.

Lawrence hoping Pixie Dust can work magic in Delaware Oaks

Barbara D. Livingston
Chuck Lawrence, formerly a top steeplechase jockey, trains Pixie Dust, who races beyond 6 1/2 furlongs for the first time in the Delaware Oaks on Saturday.

Chuck Lawrence has deep roots in the Mid-Atlantic racing community, and the Delaware Oaks is more than just another race on the calendar to him. He comes into Saturday’s Grade 2, $300,000 Oaks as the trainer of Pixie Dust, a somewhat unusual entrant based on her race history, but a player nonetheless.

Former jockey Toribio charged in traffic stop incident

Abdiel Toribio, a former jockey with $26.8 million in lifetime purse earnings, was arrested Sunday night near Ocala, Fla., and charged with resisting an officer with violence and driving with a suspended license, according to Marion County records.

Toribio, who last rode regularly in 2009, allegedly drove off while a Marion County sheriff’s deputy was partially in his truck after Toribio was stopped for an expired vehicle tag. The deputy, Christopher Frost, was able to convince Toribio to stop his vehicle after he climbed into the truck when Toribio began driving.

Aigue Marine back from layoff for Robert Dick Memorial

Tom Keyser
Aigue Marine will start for the first time since finishing second to Inimitable Romanee in the April 24 Bewitch Stakes.

There are plenty of options available Saturday in the Grade 3 Robert Dick Memorial Stakes at Delaware Park, as 13 fillies and mares will meet in the 1 3/8-mile turf marathon. The $200,000 Dick Memorial and two $50,000 overnight stakes make for an interesting appetizer prior to the day’s main event, the Grade 2 Delaware Oaks.

The Dick Memorial is a wide-open race, but a few players merit extra attention. It should be noted that the Delaware turf can be expected to have some give to it, as rain was expected in the region Thursday night and Friday morning.
