Fashion Plate scratched from Rancho Bernardo Handicap

Fashion Plate might be switched to turf for the Del Mar meeting, according to trainer Simon Callaghan.

DEL MAR, Calif. - Fashion Plate, the winner of two Grade 1 races for 3-year-old fillies earlier this year, was withdrawn from Sunday’s $150,000 Rancho Bernardo Handicap at Del Mar because of a recent bout with colic, trainer Simon Callaghan said.

Callaghan said Fashion Plate was diagnosed with colic late Friday night and that she was treated with a tranquilizer, which prevented her from starting in the Grade 3 Rancho Bernardo.

Pick six carryover of $106,845 for Sunday's program

DEL MAR, Calif. - Sunday’s nine-race program at Del Mar begins with a pick six carryover of $106,845 from Saturday.

The pool of new money on Sunday could exceed $600,000 on a card in which the sequence includes two turf races.

The pick six covers the fifth through 10th races. The day’s feature race is the $150,000 Rancho Bernardo Handicap, a Grade 3 for female sprinters. It runs as the fourth race because of the presence of heavy favorite Reneesgotzip.

Former California Horse Racing Board chairman Landsburg dies at 81

Alan Landsburg owned horses and served on the California Horse Racing Board.

DEL MAR, Calif. - Alan Landsburg, a television writer and producer who served as chairman of the California Horse Racing Board in the early 2000s, died on Thursday, the racing board announced on Saturday.

Landsburg was 81.

In racing, Landsburg purchased his first horse in 1977 and was the co-owner of such runners as Treekster, the winner of the Grade 3 California Derby at Golden Gate Fields in 1992, and Boomzeeboom, who won the Grade 3 Affirmed Handicap at Hollywood Park in 2004. Boomzeeboom broke down a month later.

The unconventional Hardest Core ready for Million

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – Brianne Slater was doing up Hardest Core’s legs about 9 a.m. Friday in a corner stall of the Tom Proctor barn at Arlington. Slater pointed to the adjacent stall.

“His rider is right there,” Slater said, pointing to Jody Petty, who smiled and introduced Keith Cooper, the van man who had driven Hardest Core to Arlington on Wednesday.

Berry rides 2,000th Remington Park Thoroughbred winner

Jockey Cliff Berry reached the mark of 2,000 Remington Park Thoroughbred wins Friday night, when he guided He Knows Better to a front-running win in the fourth race. The score came with his second mount on the card on opening night in Oklahoma City.

Berry, who is a career winner of more than 4,000 races, has racked up 15 titles at his home track of Remington. His first local seasonal championship was in 1996.

Chuck Streva, longtime Florida chart caller and handicapper, dies

Chuck Streva, longtime chart caller and south Florida morning-line maker, died Friday at Miami’s Baptist Hospital following a long illness. He was 56 years old.

Streva was the official Equipbase chart caller at both Calder Race Course and Gulfstream Park for more than two decades. He also made the morning line at both tracks and served as a public handicapper whose picks appeared for many years in the Miami Herald.

California Chrome goes slowly in half-mile workout

California Chrome breezed four furlongs in 50.40 seconds Friday at Los Alamitos.

CYPRESS, Calif. – With a time slower than expected, California Chrome continued preparations for an autumn comeback with a half-mile workout in 50.40 seconds at Los Alamitos on Friday.

The workout was the second this month for California Chrome since he lost a bid for the Triple Crown with a fourth-place finish in the Belmont Stakes on June 7. Similar to his three-furlong workout in 37.60 seconds on Aug. 8, California Chrome was not urged by exercise rider Anna Wells on Friday.

Belisarius a veterinarian's scratch from Secretariat Stakes

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – Belisarius will be a veterinarian’s scratch from the Secretariat Stakes on Saturday at Arlington, according to Arlington racing officials. The Aidan O’Brien-trained colt reportedly coughed Friday morning.

Belisarius, a one-time winner from six starts who never has contested a group or graded stakes, was sold prior to shipping from O’Brien’s stables in Ireland early this week. The Montjeu colt now is owned by Gary Barber, Wachtel Stable, and Brous Stable and will resume his racing campaign in the U.S.
