Horse who survived tornado wins first career race

Stormtoremember, who survived the 2013 tornado that devastated Moore, Okla., was a six-length maiden special weight winner Wednesday night at Remington Park. He was making the second start of his career, which was launched last December.

Stormtoremember, a 4-year-old bred in Oklahoma, was stabled at the Celestial Training Center near Moore when the storm struck in May of last year. The facilities that housed a number of Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses sustained significant damage during the tornado.

Churchill Downs Inc. replaces CEO Evans with Carstanjen

Churchill Downs Inc. has elevated its chief operating officer, Bill Carstanjen, to chief executive, replacing Robert Evans, the company’s CEO since 2006. The change is effective immediately, the company announced in a release on Thursday morning. Evans will remain the chairman of CDI’s board, the release said.

The release did not contain a reason for the change. A company spokesperson said Evans, 62, would not be available for an interview and referred inquiries to a quote in the release from Evans.

Few changes to Kentucky Derby, Oaks qualifying system

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Churchill Downs on Wednesday released the points schedules for determining eligibility to the 2015 Kentucky Derby and Oaks with minimal changes from the template established during the first two years of the system.

First implemented for the 2013 Derby and Oaks, the schedules use a graduated scale for allotting qualifying points for the respective races. Prep races deemed most important are given the most weight in determining the 20-horse cutoff for the Derby (and 14 for the Oaks).

ThistleDown to increase purses by 5 percent

ThistleDown racetrack outside of Cleveland will raise purses 5 percent across the board beginning Sept. 1, the track and casino announced Wednesday.

This is the second time the track has raised purses during the 2014 racing season. With the latest increase, purses will average $110,000 a day, the track said. Purses at the track are heavily subsidized by slot-machine revenues from an adjacent casino.

Fair Grounds says track improvements going well

Fair Grounds and its parent company, Churchill Downs Inc., remain on course to fulfill promises made to Louisiana legislators and racing regulators earlier this year regarding capital investment in racing at the New Orleans track.

Fair Grounds made a presentation to the Louisiana Racing Commission at a Monday meeting in New Orleans and provided details concerning projects to improve the backstretch, repair a troubled turf-course drainage system, and increase investment in customer service and marketing for the track’s horse-racing meet.

Fair Grounds swaps five Monday dates for Sundays

Fair Grounds in New Orleans will swap five Mondays for Sundays during its upcoming Thoroughbred meet in an amendment to its calendar approved by the Louisiana Racing Commission. The panel also granted the track an additional race date, Feb. 16.

Fair Grounds made the request at a Monday meeting during which the commission also determined that the track had complied with license conditions that called for improvements to the turf course and stable area.

Robber steals $100,000 from Hialeah money room

An unidentified man wearing a mask made off with an estimated $100,000 from the money room at Hialeah Park on Sunday after subduing an elderly employee of the track, local police said.

The man, who also was wearing gloves, confronted the employee in a hallway near the money room, gained access to the money room, and then struck and bound the employee before stuffing a bag full of cash, according to Carl Zogby, a spokesman for the Hialeah Police Department. Zogby said the department has no leads on the robbery because the only witness was the employee, who is in his mid-70s.

Remington increases bonuses for statebreds

Remington Park in Oklahoma City on Saturday night announced an immediate 10 percent increase in purse supplements for eligible Oklahoma-breds. The increase was authorized by the Thoroughbred Racing Association of Oklahoma.

The boost is for both restricted and open-company races, according to Matt Vance, vice president of racing and wagering at Remington.

“Remington Park is pleased to announce this specific increase of Oklahoma-bred purse fund distribution by 10 percent, available in open-company and Oklahoma-bred races,” he said in a release.

Longtime owner-breeder Holloway dies at 83

David P. Holloway, a longtime Thoroughbred owner and breeder whose top horse was the standout sprinter Bet On Sunshine, died Thursday night at Jewish Hospital following a lengthy illness. He was 83.

Holloway lived in Middletown, Ky., where he founded a successful concrete business. He owned horses in partnership with David Levitch before mostly going solo, employing Steve Morguelan, Paul McGee, and Bill Connelly as his primary trainers.
