Uncaptured, 2012 Canadian Horse of the Year, retired

Uncaptured won 7 of 18 career starts and earned $1,065,147.

Uncaptured, a multiple graded stakes winner who received the Sovereign Award as Canada’s Horse of the Year in 2012 as a 2-year-old, has been retired from racing, according to a release from trainer Mark Casse on Friday.

Stud plans have not been announced for the Ontario-bred 4-year-old Lion Heart horse. Casse bought Uncaptured for $290,000 at the 2011 Keeneland September yearling sale for John Oxley, who campaigned him throughout his racing career.

NYRA hires Miner as director of marketing

ELMONT, N.Y. – The New York Racing Association has once again reached outside of the racing industry to hire an executive, this time tabbing Darran Miner as the organization’s new director of marketing.

Miner replaces Rodnell Workman, who came to NYRA from the National Football League. Workman’s contract, which expired in the spring, was not renewed. Allen Gutterman, a former NYRA marketing executive, worked as a marketing consultant for a four-month period that was set to expire this weekend.

Jockey Club denies stud-book privileges to four

The Jockey Club has permanently barred two horsemen after they pleaded guilty to animal-cruelty charges and will deny privileges of the stud book to two trainers for five years because of recent Class 1 drug violations, the organization announced Thursday.

Keefe takes helm at Maryland horsemen’s group

Winds of change are blowing in Maryland racing circles, as trainer Tim Keefe has been named the new president of the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association and the 15-person board of directors has seven new members.

Keefe is only the third president of the MTHA since the organization was founded in 1987. Richard Hoffberger was president from 1987 until he resigned in 2012, at which time Richard Meyer took over.

Monmouth backs off on sports betting

Tuesday evening services for Vazquez

Services for Juan Vazquez, the exercise rider killed in a spill at Belmont Park last Friday, will be held 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Elmont Funeral Home, 1529 Hempstead Turnpike in Elmont, NY.

Vazquez, 39, was killed after a horse he was working in the morning ducked into the rail and threw the rider.

Zia puts all Thoroughbred races at 5 1/2 furlongs for Sunday card

Zia Park, which was forced to cancel after the second race on Saturday, announced it has moved the distances for nearly all of its Sunday races to either 5 1/2 furlongs for Thoroughbreds or 400 yards for Quarter Horses because the racing surface was impacted by flooding in the area. Zia does, however, plan to keep its final two Quarter Horse races at 350 yards.

The surface is listed as muddy for the Sunday card that starts at 12:15 p.m. Mountain.

Zia Park cancels rest of Saturday card

Zia Park in Hobbs, N.M., canceled racing after the first two races Saturday due to inclement weather, the track announced. The program was the first of the meet. Zia anticipates racing Sunday, when it puts on the $75,000 Premiere Cup Sprint Handicap.

The Hobbs area experienced flash flooding overnight, according to Jonathan Horowitz, the announcer at Zia. He said in an email that more flooding was forecasted to hit in the near future Saturday.

I Keep Saying will be the one to catch in Muckleshoot Tribal Classic

I Keep Saying became the first horse to run 6 1/2 furlongs in less than 1:13 in North America.

AUBURN, Wash. – Speed could be king Sunday in the main event on Washington Cup Day at Emerald Downs. I Keep Saying, who set the North American standard for 6 1/2 furlongs when he ran the distance in 1:12.94 six weeks ago, will try to carry that speed a fair bit farther in the $50,000 Muckleshoot Tribal Classic at 1 1/16 miles.
