Game On Dude, recently retired after a stellar career that included an unprecedented three victories in the Santa Anita Handicap, will spend his retirement at Old Friends Farm in Georgetown, Ky., the horse’s co-owner, Bernie Schiappa, said Friday.

Slagle hired as Woodbine's new racing secretary

ETOBICOKE, Ontario—Woodbine has hired a new Thoroughbred racing secretary, Stuart Slagle, who currently holds that position at Hastings Racecourse in Vancouver.

Slagle replaces Steve Lym, who has assumed the role of director of racing at Woodbine.

Slagle, 47, worked at Colonial Downs, Sunland Park, and the Maryland Jockey Club, before becoming the racing secretary at Manor Downs, Arapahoe Park, and finally Hastings in 2013. His job at Woodbine begins Nov. 10.

Levine suspended 21 days for second positive drug test

ELMONT, N.Y. - Three New York-based trainers face suspensions after substances banned for use on race day were found in post race samples of their horses.

Bruce Levine will serve a 21-day suspension beginning Oct. 19 for the finding of the drug Vardenafil, also known as Levitra, in the post-race sample of Santa Elf, who finished second in the ninth race at Belmont Park on May 2. Levine was originally suspended  30 days but had nine days stayed pending no further violation of New York State Gaming Commission rules for 180 days,  beginning Nov. 9. Levine was also fined $5,000.

Past performance data will note first-race geldings

Equibase, which collects past-performance information on horses for distributors, has added a notation to its entry data that will indicate that a horse is starting for the first time since being reported as a gelding, the company said Thursday.

The notation will appear as a small superscript “1” next to the horse’s sex in the entry data. The notation also will appear in Equibase race records.

O'Neill suspended by New York gaming commission

Doug O'Neill is considering establishing a stable in the East some day but, he says, "My roots are still in California."

Trainer Doug O’Neill will serve a 45-day suspension and was fined $10,000 by the New York State Gaming Commission for the finding of a forbidden substance in one of his horses following a race at Belmont Park in June 2013.

Under a settlement reached with the gaming commission, O’Neill’s suspension does not begin until Nov. 3, two days after the Breeders’ Cup is run at Santa Anita. The suspension runs through Dec. 17.

Harness study recommends high cobalt test threshold

A study funded by U.S. harness horsemen is recommending that state racing commissions adopt a far higher threshold for cobalt than previous studies have suggested, generating concern that an effort to swiftly crack down on the abuse of the naturally occurring substance may be delayed or sidetracked.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – A new country song called “Dirt” espouses the many uses of God’s good earth but neglects to mention its popularity as a replacement for Polytrack. But when some 75,000 fans flock to Keeneland on the opening three-day weekend of the fall meet, many will express their delight at laying eyes on the ecru-colored loam conspicuously absent the last eight years here.

Sam Houston stakes schedule worth $1.7 million

The $400,000 Houston Ladies Classic and the Grade 3, $200,000 Connally Turf Cup will again serve as the centerpiece of the Sam Houston Race Park meet when the stakes share a program Jan. 24. Sam Houston released its 20-race, $1.7 million stakes schedule Wednesday. The track opens its 32-date season Jan. 16.
