Santa Anita: Pick six carryover of $110,484 for Saturday

ARCADIA, Calif. – There is a two-day pick six carryover of $110,484 for Saturday’s 10-race program.

The carryover was clinched after Kulik Lodge ($5) won Friday’s seventh race, with one race remaining on the program.

Saturday’s pick six covers the fifth through 10th races. The pool of new money could exceed $500,000.

$138K carryover for Saturday's pick six

ELMONT, N.Y. - After going unhit for a third consecutive day, the pick six will have a carryover of $138,241 into Saturday’s card at Belmont Park.

Heading into Friday’s final leg of the wager, three of the 11 horses were covered in the pick six but none of the three won. The race was won by Loon River, a 7-1 shot who returned $16.20. Congress Park, the 6-5 favorite, could do no better than third. A victory by Congress Park would have resulted in four winning pick six tickets at $34,560 each.

Meadow chosen as first Ron Rippey Award recipient

Barry Meadow, a longtime public handicapper and writer, has won the inaugural Ron Rippey Award for Handicapping Media, the sponsor of the award, Brisnet.com, announced on Thursday.

Meadow, who wrote the handicapping book “Money Secrets at the Racetrack,” was selected for a piece called “Statistics and Garbage” that appeared in the Horseplayers Association of North American newsletter. He will receive $1,000 and be honored at the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters Awards dinner on Oct. 29 in Arcadia, Calif.

Probation violation earns O'Neill another suspension

Doug O'Neill endured a string of critical articles in The New York Times and other publications after winning the Kentucky Derby last year.

ARCADIA, Calif. -- Trainer Doug O’Neill began a 45-day suspension on Thursday after reaching a stipulated agreement with the California Horse Racing Board for violating the probationary terms of a 2012 suspension for a medication violation.

O’Neill suspension is the second 45-day penalty issued against him in the last 10 days.

In late September, O’Neill was suspended 45 days and fined $10,000 by the New York State Gaming Commission – from Nov. 3 to Dec. 17 – for a medication violation at Belmont Park in 2013.

Vazquez's 90-day suspension upheld

The Delaware Thoroughbred Racing Commission voted unanimously to uphold a 90-day suspension meted out to leading trainer Juan Vazquez for an altercation at Delaware Park, where he allegedly punched jockey Trevor McCarthy, officials for the commission said Wednesday.

Monmouth begins building amphitheater

Monmouth Park officials had a formal ground-breaking Wednesday for the 7,500-seat amphitheater that will be built on track property just north of the grandstand and adjacent to the racetrack picnic area.

The amphitheater is expected to open next year.

Cigar, two-time Horse of the Year, dies at 24

Cigar, shown winning the 1996 Woodward Stakes, was voted Horse of the Year in 1995 and 1996 and earned just under $10 million for his career.

Two-time Horse of the Year Cigar, arguably the greatest racehorse of the 1990s and a member of the National Racing Hall of Fame, died Tuesday evening at age 24, from complications following surgery for severe osteoarthritis in his neck at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky. The horse resided at the nearby Kentucky Horse Park's Hall of Champions.

Game On Dude, Amazombie arrive at Old Friends

Three-time Santa Anita Handicap winner Game On Dude and Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner and champion Amazombie arrived Tuesday afternoon at Old Friends equine retirement farm in Georgetown, Ky.

The two geldings were on the same flight from California to Kentucky, and then shared a van for the trip from Lexington’s Blue Grass Airport to Old Friends.

“I think they’re buddies now,” Old Friends founder and president Michael Blowen said as he supervised the unloading of the horses, adding that both traveled well.
