Aqueduct: Pick six carryover of $227,192 for Wednesday

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – There will be a pick six carryover of $227,192 at Aqueduct on Wednesday after the wager was not hit for a third straight program Monday.

Miss Motivation, a 13-1 shot under Israel Rodriguez and one of five horses uncovered in the last leg of the pick six on Monday, outfinished Flirtatious Spring, the 2-1 favorite and a horse to which there were five live pick six tickets, to win the finale.

There had been a carryover of $85,762 entering Monday’s card after the wager went unhit Saturday and Sunday.

Proud Azteca disqualified from allowance win after being deemed ineligible

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Prompted by an unusual circumstance, Proud Azteca has been disqualified from a recent victory at Churchill Downs because the colt was ineligible for the race.

Proud Azteca, trained by Mike Maker, won a turf allowance Oct. 30 at Churchill. However, according to a stewards’ ruling, it was discovered several hours later that the Indiana-bred colt did not meet the criteria as outlined by the race conditions. A disqualification subsequently was declared, with Hesinfront awarded first amid a new order of finish and the $44,604 purse redistributed accordingly.

Los Alamitos cancels Champion of Champions

Los Alamitos has canceled this year’s running of the prestigious Champion of Champions race for older Quarter Horses, the track announced in a press release on Saturday, with track owner Ed Allred citing concerns of clenbuterol testing as the cause.

“The major Quarter Horse tracks and the American Quarter Horse Association need to standardize and enforce regulations prohibiting clenbuterol and its analogues,” Allred said in the press release.

Parx jockeys to ride despite opposition to waiver

Jockeys were expected to ride at Parx racetrack outside Philadelphia this weekend after representatives of the Jockeys’ Guild met Friday with track management and reported progress on resolving a dispute over a waiver the track distributed to riders this week, according to the head of the Guild.

Terry Meyocks, the national manager of the Guild, said after the five-hour meeting Friday that the talks were “positive,” even if the matter remains unresolved as yet.

Indiana vet case draws scrutiny, debate

On Saturday, Sept. 20, a backstretch security employee at Indiana Grand racetrack walked into work and asked her supervisor what she should do if she saw a veterinarian in the stall of a horse that was entered to race that day. Though she had not reported it to anyone at the time, the employee, Jamie Kolls, who was hired by the track in July to work as a barn walker for $9 an hour, told the supervisor she had seen such an incident a day earlier, when making her rounds to check on horses entered to race on the Friday card.

Maryland Racing Media Association crab feast honors three

The Maryland Racing Media Association will hold its annual crab feast Saturday after the races at Laurel Park. This year’s honorees are Harold Snyder, jockey Victor Carrasco, and trainer Kieron Magee.

Snyder will receive the Humphrey S. Finney Award for lifetime contributions to the Maryland horse racing industry. Snyder is the chairman of International Sound Corp., which provides video production, digital graphics, sound, photo finish, and timing systems for racing.

Carrasco, the Eclipse Award-winning apprentice of 2013, will be given the Dale Austin Newsmaker Award.

Hazel Park granted 2015 dates for Thoroughbreds, Standardbreds

Hazel Park Raceway will continue hosting both Thoroughbred and harness racing in 2015, as approved by the Michigan Gaming Control Board on Oct. 31.

The Detroit-area racetrack was approved for 40 Thoroughbred and mixed breed dates in 2015, running Fridays and Saturdays from May 1 to Sept. 12. Hazel Park hosted 38 flat dates in 2014, adding six cards to the end of the meet when Northville Downs surrendered its license.

Jacque Fulton, California trainer and racing manager, dies

Jacque Fulton, a former trainer who worked for more than a decade as racing manager for California owners Marty and Pam Wygod, died on Tuesday of Alzheimer’s disease, according to her cousin, trainer Dan Hendricks.

Fulton was 60. She had spent recent months in the Phoenix area, close to family.

In the 1970s, Fulton worked as an exercise rider for Charlie Whittingham, galloping such prominent horses as Dahlia, King Pellinore and Cougar II. In the 1980s, she was briefly married to former Southern California trainer John Fulton.

October wagering increases on Breeders' Cup bump

Betting on U.S. races in October was up 2.7 percent compared to the same month last year, according to figures released Wednesday by Equibase, but the October numbers this year were bolstered significantly by wagering on the Friday card of the Breeders’ Cup two-day event, which took place Oct. 31 this year, compared to Nov. 1 last year.
